A friend of mine wrote a tutorial on this. The thing is, the text is in Russian, but since you said you\'re a visual person, I thought the graphics would be enough for you to grasp the technique. The tutorial is right HERE.

Hiya Josh,

Check out my tutorial on www.miez.nl/putty-n-paint
in the \'tutorial\' section you can find a pdf file on sculpting, and there is also a bit on sculpting chainmail. Only one addition to make on this, practice the technique (which is also illustrated) on a bit of fimo or sculpey first to get the hang of it.

Mazzel,

Never would have thought of that technique, looks good but more like a scalemail/chainmail/ringmail hybrid.

EDIT: Just realized that technique would look perfect on a conversion I am doing, so I plan to give it a try - thanks Margo!

Here is a demo of a more common technique for chainmail: http://www.lyonstudio.com/Sculpting/Sculpting%20Textures.htm

It takes some practice but results are good.

To add, here is another discussion on the subject: http://www.planetfigure.com/forums/index.php?s=18cf7296d0c1ee4c5bfd8e5af10e5d28&showtopic=3912

As mentioned there, you should go for a texture that looks like mail instead of an exact scale replica.

No worries!

I think the chainmail looks great! As Ming-Hua said, it is the texture that counts. Go and take a very close look at chainmail on metals and you\'ll see that it is often not even as good as what Joshua did here.

Keep at it!

Btw, I have once tried to do this in \'folds\', as if the chanmail had folds in it. This diod not work so nice. I then made the chainmail flat, but on a really thin bit of rolled out GS. Then, after curing I could just stick it to fresh green \'molded\' into folds. HTH
