Sculpting pointy helmets

Dangerous when wet
Hey all,

I\'m in the process of sculpting a dark eldar warrior based on the tasty piece of art work from the new 40k rule book in inquisitor scale.

SGT24F.BMP

My problem is this. I can\'t get the head right. I\'ve tried everything I know, but I can\'t do it. The body and legs are sorted and the arms are coming along (though the shoulders are causing a bit of jip) I\'m not shy about getting out the green stuff/milliput etc., but I don\'t claim any crazy skills in that department. Any ideas on how I can do it?

Thanks so much in advance of all your helpful advice,
Cybersquig

Well, I don\'t think I can help with actual sculpting techniques for cone-heads since that\'s a fairly basic shape. Simple enough if you do it over a slightly smaller, solid cone-head I\'d imagine?

If it\'s getting the shape right. the curve and angles, then I might have some ideas. To understand the shape a bit better you can run your fingers/sculpting tools/pencil along the outer edge of the helmet to get a feel for the shape. Another thing to try, to understand the curves and angles better, is using a visual point of reference. For this, you can make a square around the helmet, top and bottom lines touching the pointy top and chin, sides touching the sides of the helm. Or you can do a circle with the center between the eyes and as wide as the helmet, or a circle with the center in the middle of the head between the point and chin and as wide as those points. Or center lines, between the eyes, horizontal and vertical. Circles, squares (rectangles actually I guess) and strait lines are alot easier for your brain to recognize and use as a reference to see where the model curves away from at what point and at what angle, etc.

Build in stages, if necessary making a rough head shape in pure Milliput and sanding to get a sharp point after it\'s hardened.

If you only have GS and Milliput I\'d use a blend of the two for best results.

Maybe you can get few Eldar Guardian head on ebay and use it as the base. You can use knife to cut away the face. From there you can start sculpting the face.
