Just an amateur reply here, so take it with a grain of salt....I would think making into very thin \'sausages\' by rolling it out, Cut the two ends off so you have a evenly shaped thin rod. Then coil it or use it on your model as you need.

Once it begins to harden just a bit (not too much) begin adding the texture with a very fine tool (needle, toothpick). You could also fray the end up a bit this way too.

Building off Supervike\'s comment if you twist the \"sausage\" length as it starts to harden some you will get that braided look without having to try and sculpt the twists yourself.

Maybe you could just twist two bits of wire together? You wouldn\'t be able to texture or fray it very easily (although you could use the copper wire inside cables  ), but it would be easy :D

I use wire to do this----I don\'t have pictures of my own rig, but I found this on the net---
Basically, I took a page from jewelry makers. This works like a champ, and you can make about any size rope you want.
Good luck,
Kevin

---maybe I\'ll do an article on it in the next month or so...

for quick rope, you can use a cup hook (screwed into something stationary, of course) and a pair of pliers. Just loop the wire back on itself, place the loop over the cup hook, and twist the other ends with the pliers.

That make any sense at all?

Depending on what the rope is for, you could perhaps use model ship rope, it comes in a variety of styles and sizes, and if you need it stiff, just dip it into some thinned out craft glue. Just a thought...

Instead of the wire twister just put the ends in a battery drill. Hold the ends and ever so slowly turn on the drill. (Maybe hold the wire with pliers)

Makes very nice rope very quickly.

Good luck.
