sculpting scale

as i am hoping to get into sculting i was wondering what is scale for example WhFB and WH40K are both 28MM scale does this mean they are 28 mm high.
If i wanted to sculpt a LOTR figure for example how high would this need to be?

i think WFB and 40k are more around 30mm and lotr is 25mm

Not wanting to state the obvious but if you want to know how tall a figure is you can just measure it with a ruler and get an accurate answer. People argue all the time about what \'28mm\' means. Always best to measure one.

\"scale\" is a very subjective thing in this business.

Some are from the ground to the eyes, others are to the top of the head. Some say for an average person, others say for a 6\' tall man.

Scale creep is real. Look at an older mini and notice how much smaller it is than the current \'standard\'.

Horizontal Scales may be different for terrain than for minis:
D&D is played on 1\" = 5\' or 1:60
Clicks are played on 1.5\" grid.
Warlord, Warhammer and others use a ruler without really defining what an inch or centimeter are representing.
Classic Battletech was played on a 100 meter hex, but you could only fit one mech in a hex - go figure.

As Steve said its the biggest question in the hobby.. what exactly is 28m..to some its the top of the head..to some its to the eye.. is this for a person 6 foottall or 5\'10\". Im 5\'2\" inches in real height.. would you sculpt a 28mm figure of me 28mm to the eyes or would you do something much shorter..Companies like Reaper got around the 35mm tall hero figures by calling it \"Heroic Scale\".

So in other words.. aim for 30mm to the top of the head and you will be ok.. if you end up 35..no ones really going to hold it against you.. especially if its cool.
