SCULPTING SCALES

hello again all
basically ive started a post about my next gd entry and i got loads of great feed back about it. now, im on the next planning stage. how to sculpt scales? what would you say is the best puty for it, the best tools and any good methods. im asking this due to the fact i know bugger all about sculpting:beer: cheers

The easiest answer is: something you get along with well.

If you have putties what do you have?
Assuming you don\'t have putties do you know what you can get locally or are you going to order based on suggestions? If so where you\'re based would be helpful.

Making a custom impression tool is almost certain to give you the best results.

Milliput would be a good one to use, or you could try cutting some very thin plasticard into diamond shapes and overlapping them.

thanks einion thats great. oh btw im using gren stuff. any idea where i could get that tool9the sorta shield shaped 1) in the direct link from? also do the reckon mthos hownin the link you gave me(below would work on a cloak) also im based in an area with places like gw and modelzone not too far away.

That plasticard idea would take AGES though! Unless you mean using the plasticard in order to MAKE a tool like in the other example?

Hi Used Fimo on this guy .. I wouldn\'t really recommend it though.. The better stuff would be milliput o magisculp rather than Greenstuff . The problem with greenstuff is that it has a bit of memory so loses the harder edge you need for this kind of work.

I ust basically rolled out the material then cut out the diamond shapes.. starting at the tail and overlapping working up the body...

Just a thought - you could try asking Queenoftheunifrogs - she did a sculpt recently of a bird with AMAZING feathers, and they\'re quite like scales in a way (Especially if you think of their evolution)

So she might be able to give you some good tips.

i haven\'t tried this myself, but reading this, i reckon you could take some sandpaper (i\'d take it quite rough) and carefully press it into the surface of the scales, this would give you a bit of a rough finish.

in any case, i\'d make the scales quite rough, with little chips and gauges (?) out of the edges and stuff. Just to give it some realism.

That\'s a custom impression tool like I refer to above - homemade.

right, what i meant was; do you reckon the methods shown in the direct link you gave me would work for a cloak(the 1 with the shield shaped tool) and also, how would i go about making that shield shaped tool thingy he used for stamping scales? and finnaly, where can i get milliput from and is it expensive?

i know that body. is that a sneak peek at something new?

They\'re worth trying at least. If they don\'t work directly they\'d at least form a good basis.

That\'s a tricky one as you could make it in more than one way. If you want to make it entirely from putty I\'d make the flat base first, wait for it to harden, then apply the edge which I would thin down after it has hardened by scraping , filing or sanding.

Modelling shops (some art-supplies shops have it too) or from online suppliers. It\'ll range from about £2.50 to a fiver, depending on the type and where you get it. Cheapest is Grey-Green I think, Silver Grey and Superfine White are more because they\'re slightly finer.

If you can find it I\'d recommend MagicSculp instead though.
