Sculpting walls and rubble

Hi,

While looking at the galleries I stumbled across this mini:

The wall and rubble is a nice touch. I am however in doubt to which materials to use when sculpting larger structures.

Green Stuff is an obvious choice, but that would cost way too much sculpting large structures.

Clay is no good as it falls apart.

What would you guys use for sculpting walls and rubble?

Polystyrene for the wall, get a hot wire cutter and you\'ll be able to do this in minutes.

that looks like two layers of foam core board. We use it for presentations.

1/2\" stryofoam (pink or blue - don\'t use the whtie beaded stuff or the green florists\'s stuff) will work as well, but be a bit thicker - it can all be cut with a sharp razor knife or hot wire foam cutter.

That is also a great place to use your apple barrel paints in lieu of your more expensive mini paints.

Got to agree with Airhead here - looks like a double layer of foam core with spackle applied to give it texture.

I\'ve used a couple of methods.

my favourite, and one i\'ve not yet explored enough is using a quick setting plaster - it\'s used in mould making and my local art store sells it very cheaply. It sets in less than 1/2 hour.

mix some dark paint in with it + water as usual and pour it into a mould, eg. an old food carton etc to the thickness of the wall. Once dry, you can cut it, scribe details in it, and also it can be broken with good natural edges and the surplus smashed down as rubble. The dark paint added means that when broken, it\'s not a garish white colour.

I created the rubble at the feet of this guy using this method;

I\'ve also used corktiles cut to shape and covered with magic sculpt or milliput and textured as it dries.......

I must concur with my learned collegues as to the foam core but I would like to add that it\'s generally best to cut foam core with a new blade in your e-xacto (hobby) knife as they will dull up fast cutting that stuff. Don\'t throw the blades away however as once they become to dull for cutting foam core (won\'t take long at all) they are still pleanty sharp for cleaning flash and such off minis, cutting plastic sheet, whatever. You\'ll know the blade is getting dull when it starts to catch on the foam and pull on it, swap it then because it will start tearing the foam away from the card leaving a mess.

For the sharp angles in the example link using high density foam I would say to use a knife. Hot wire cutters tend to leave more rounded or wavy cuts unless your hand is steady as a rock and your eye like an eagle.
