SCULPTING-works in progress

Well... I\'d love to get started on the face but I\'ve run into a bit of a snag... It seems I grossly underestimated how much greenstuff I had, and I\'ve run out... Hopefully I\'ll have more by Monday. I\'m not too terribly worried about the face. Since its an anime style sculpt the nose will basically be a point and the facial structure will be fairly smooth. The only thing I\'m not sure about are the eyes... I\'m not sure how to do them. I\'ll have to start finding some anime sculpts to see how they do the eyes...

Thanks for the feedback Itchy.

I would make the hips wider then angle the thigh bone part of the armature inward as it gets to the knee.

The best advice I got was from Kev White and it is to work the anatomy from the inside.
Start with the bone structure then the musclature then smooth the skin.
Sounds long winded but is great for learning anatomy and proportions.

The pic has been up before but this is a giant sculpt Im doing and you can see the different stages.
Forearms - bone structure.
Legs - muscle placement.
Abs and chest - skin added.

I actually just made the hips wider and repositioned the leg armature before I ran out of greenstuff this morning/afternoon. It looks alot better now. As for the working from the inside out, thats more or less what I\'m tring to do. I guess I\'ve kinda skipped the skeleton part and just moved into the musculature part, and I havent done much for muscle detailing and skin because everything but her head and hands will be covered by the kimono.

Thanks for the feed back Klute.

*edit*
Just thought I\'d throw on a new scan of what i got done before I ran out of greenstuff. The right arm (the one thats down) will probably be holding a paper fan.

@emo.. - thats a good start. as for eyes. i have always struggled. with some 30mm sculpts, io have been building up the face shape and then using a sharpish tool, puching in the canthi of the eyes (the bits on either side). this tends to give it a good round shape and starts to form the upper and lower borders. then, if necessary, go over the upper and lower lids when the putty has cured a little for more definition.

@itchy - no its not a sm shoulder pad. the pic doesn\'t show it, but it\'s a half buried skull (ie i could only sculpt the top of the cranium and the top of the orbits!)

@Emo....no problem.
The reason why I do stuff that will be sculpt over is for practice. It seems a shame to miss out on anatomy and proportion practice. Need all I can get.
Most of the time when I refer to the skeleton it is the actual armature.

Well. I got more greenstuff. I\'m pretty sure I have enough. The sculpting is going far better than I ever expected (I have a second sculpt started pretty much the same time as the first, but because of it\'s shape I can\'t scan it). Hoping to start the head either tonight or tomorow morning, I\'ll try to get some scans up soon so that I can show you all what I\'ve managed to get done. I really appreciate the feedback, it\'s making it alot easier to push on when I\'m getting frustrated.

Nice work on the Junkie Dumbo ;) Infact everyones seams to have been busy so heres something I\'ve started but I\'m not sure if i should ditch it. Was/is gonna be a Sith.

Hey! whats happend to my avatar?? It now looks like something from Narnia ?? :)
*edited: fixed now I\'m a dirty Nurgle boy.

Looks really good to me darkart. I think you should stick with it.

Anyways. Got more done on mine... Have a feeling that I\'m gonna run out of green stuff again... I don\'t know where it all goes. I can put half a pack on and it looks like no progress has been made... Oh well. My other sculpt is doing far better. It\'s too bad I can\'t scan it. The face is nearly done on that one. Just have the clothes and hair left. I need to finish that one so I\'ll be stopping with this one till I know I have enough green stuff to complete the other first. But anyways here\'s what I\'ve got done on this one:

Taste the Nurgle Rainbow

It would seem my old account died or something, so here\'s to starting over again!

So I\'ve been going back to sculpting, been consulting with the pros, and really feeling motivated. Here are the results of my motivation - a Plaguebearer bust!

Inspirational art from Adrian Smith:

Burned the sculpture\'s blobby base-structure. Burned it baaaaaaad...

I\'ll keep you posted as progress is made.

P.S. Sanjay, did you ever post that Engine of the Gods on TPV? I don\'t remember seeing it there.

I\'ve posted this on the painted wip section but i thought i might aswell show you what I\'ve been getting up to with GS
Its a little uneven but i think it should be okay once he\'s connected with his body. :)

@wyrmling - niiiice start. looks really cool. you can\'t beat adrian smith for good quality inspiration

@darkarts - what scale is it?

Freak: The sith is 28mm and the weird head thing is the same size as the Eldar Wraithlord head which is quite big but i didn\'t want to make it life-like and kept it simple.

Great stuff guys.

That painted head looks good DarkArt.
Is that the green thats painted ?
I lately painted a green and hated it. Next time I will get one cast so I can clean it up better.

Klute: Yeah i painted over the GS. I would prefer to paint metal but this is a one off and i don\'t have the gear to cast my own stuff. :( Mmmmm now theres an idea. Do you cast your own stuff Klute?

Hey guys and gals! Some great looking stuff in this thread, gotta say I love that elephant thingy!

This is my first attempt at sculpting a mini. It\'s going to be a chaos dwarf (I was inspired by the hellcannon crew). Of course he still needs some beard and stuff.

Has anyone suggestions on how to sculpt plaits? Should I sculpt them directly on the mini on wires or sculpt them first then glue them to the mini? Should I actually plait the plaits (that\'s gonna be fiddly alright!).

I realize it looks very glossy on the pictures (doesn\'t look that glossy IRL), it\'s because of the oil I used for smoothing.

Im sure I have seen a tutorial for plaits. I think Ming Hau did it on 1listsculpting.
