Second model in 14 years. Looking for general advice.

Sorry the pictures are not very good.
I have been trying to use very thin paint for blending.
Also the model was dented on his head so I painted it as damage. This is something I'm not sure how to do. I tried some Cyril style damage on his left knee and grieve but it looked rubbish.
I also tried to paint his lens to look like it has cracked from the bump on the head.

He was from a box of bits a friend sent me years ago. What is the best way to get the paint from the deep recesses in the models? I think I used Nitromorse (spelling?) back in the day.

Any advice appreciated :)

A lot of him is not finished mind.

Hi Lam, looking good so far. Photo's are a little washed out & seem to be throwing some blue in that makes it harder to read the red. Regardless, he's nicely set up, is he done? A touch of ink to discolour the stubby gun barrel might be nice :)

Is the original paint in the cracks enamel or acrylic? Nitromors for the former. Dettol, Fairy Power Spray or Simple Green soak for acrylic. Whichever product you use, a good scrub with a toothbrush & then a dig into the cracks with a cocktail stick should clear out the last of the old paint. Check out the sticky thread in the Painting & Conversions section of the forum or search for keywords strip/ping for more info or alternate products to use.

There's a handful of people who've started WIP threads this summer after a long gap from the hobby, so you're in good company. I recommend tracking down each other's threads & giving each other the odd nudge :D I was there a couple of years ago so know the feeling. Welcome :good:

Cheers, B.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I can't quite tell what kind of paint is on them. Is there a good way to check?
Here is the marine again. Slightly better shots but not great still.
I have tried a few new (for me) Things. Like the glowing eye and Tamiya weathering compounds on his legs.
I have made the one eye glow so it is more obvious that the other is broken from the bump on the head :)

Just needs a bit of touching up and he will be good to go.

Picture comes up bigger here.

Honestly I would drop the lighting effects because 1)only having one eye with it when it's not an augmentic or something seldom looks good, and 2) I think for your average run of the mill trooper you would be more suited just leaving him as is as you did a good higher then table top standard to him. Just my thoughts is all.

Thanks for that. He's not a character model no. But neither is he going to be used for anything. I just paint at the moment. I would be interested in the general opinion on the eye. I quite like it myself but obviously its not going to be unanimous.
Thanks for the feedback.

I like the eye Lam, a little bit of (subtle) individual character on a trooper is a good thing in my book :good:

For the stripping, just start with the gentlest cleaner you have & work up from there as needs be.

Liam, I'm not going to offer advice (mostly because you're clearly a way better painter than I am!), but I was wondering if you could give me some - namely, how did you get that fantastic, deep red colour? What recipe did you use?

One thing I would say, and I'm only going by what I've seen on other minis, is that the amount of glow the eye seems to be giving off is maybe a bit more than the brightness of the eye itself would suggest. Maybe try brightening up the eye, or toning down the highlight a little would make it seem more natural?

Overall though, I think it's a belter!
