Secrecy over Golden Demon entries

I was just wondering why people are so secretive over their GD entries?

I\'ve been pretty secretive about mine, but then I started wondering why that is. Even if someone copies my idea exactly, conversion, paint scheme, base, even if they do that, the best painted will still win, so what am I scared of?

What are others thoughts on this?

Shhh ! They\'ll hear you ! Now thay already know you have a GD entry. Next think you know they\'ll send ninjas to your home to take WIP pics and post them under your name. And we certainly wouldn\'t want that, would we ? :bouncy:

I think a lot of it is to do with the desire to impress the judges with something they havent seen before, as opposed to stop someone copying.

I also think it might be to do with not lettign the competition see how hard they need to work to beat your entry

I think that\'s the biggest reason, personally.

It\'s all about bias

One reason is to keep your competition from knowing what they are going up against. A competitor wants to do their best with the skill-set they possess without allowing their competition a chance to one-up you. If you are converting, and someone else wants to just paint, they may do an elaborate conversion so they are (hopefully) looked for favorably upon by the judges.

I have yet to see a competitor copy another competitor.

Another reason to keep it on the \'down-low\' is because the initial \'POW\' factor is gone once you\'ve seen the piece 20 times on a computer screen. Possible judges who look at gear will be able to pick something apart because they have time at their comp they don\'t necessarily have during jugding. This can also be biased by what people are saying about it, even if it is completely unfounded. Plus, why would anyone give an award to something that only scores a \'7\' on CMON? It doesn\'t matter that the scoring system on CMON is bulls**t, it could still affect how a judge views your entry.

Once the Demons are over though, we get a lot of eye candy! That\'s not so bad, is it?

It definately is fun to see a completly new and fresh idea seemingly come out of nowhere when the results are posted.

i must say i do that myself too, and really dont know why but always wait until the end of the comp to post the entries. in this case Spanish GD, and its in November so.... i think ill have to wait

If you\'re so keen on posting WIP\'s but don\'t want to give anything away, you could try posting what I call \"teaser pics\"- something like a close-up shot on just an arm, or face, or some other part that doesn\'t show the entire piece. Kinda like making it into a puzzle and then post the whole thing after the GD\'s.
You may get low scores on these shots, however, since some don\'t like seeing just a small part and will vote it down because of it. (if the rating matters to you, that is, it\'s something I\'ve learned to ignore).

Many people don\'t like to let others see what they are working on until it\'s finished. It\'s not just mini painters either.

How many folk know of someone who locks themselves away in their workshop or garage beavering away furtively until they unveil their results of their efforts.

How many schoolchildren adopt that classic \'arm across paper pose\' when they are writing so no one can see what they are doing?

Yeah, if I remember correctly, they do that all the way through college also. It was very frustrating...I mean how the hell was I supposed to copy the answers to the finals with their arms in the way?

i was very fortunate in that aspect coz i was surronded by good friends that so eagerly sahre they knowledge, so we all could fail with the same mark

I agree with Avicenna and raginggaijin, if you impress the judges with something never seen before you can aspire to a better place.

On the other side, like El Guardian, I have a couple of good friend to discuss my entries.

I agree. I do not share with the mass public, but only with people who I trust. It helps to have an unbiased set of eyes to review your work.

i usually share them with some GD winner i have around here, you know God creates them, and they Join (as we say) nah... supose im just lucky

i trust them and know they wont steal my ideas, also my usuall friends make very good judges

It is sorta silly, but some folks stretch it a bit. I remember bringing in a mini to a local conversion contest- man the flak I got from even the dudes running it for dropping off my piece early. So sorry for being organized, guess there aren\'t too many medics that aren\'t... hmmm, now where is the guy with that sucking chest wound, I could swear I put him over by that tree...
So what I\'m saying if there are early birds don\'t tortion your testes over it man(alt. rupture any gametes). Let us early ones throw down the glove and say here it is baby. It does the whole competion some good. Like Avicenna/Jarret said, it just shows the others how hard they have to work now.

I personally don\'t see what much of the fuss is about. Last year me and Jim critiqued each other\'s work before we went... even though he is a trusted friend and we were competing in different categories.. But in a way this site would be a good place to show off your mini before judging.. maybe a 9.8 doesn\'t gaurentee a statue, but the reverse logic is every winner has been above 8.5 when shown on this site. I think if you put your stuff up and didn\'t tell anyone what it was for, it wouldn\'t make much difference as I don\'t belive there is any clause that the mini cannot be shown anywhere before in the rules. However, most of us sometimes put it off and we only have a few days (or in some peple\'s cases, minutes, seconds) before juding so the mini might not be finished anyways.. and if it\'s one thing I hate it\'s an underfinished miniature person!

well it dosent really matter to me, cause ill NEVER be good enough to go, but i can see that if i was, i wouldnt be able to keep it a secret. well maybe i could, but i could see where that would add to the \"drama\" i dont know, i think i would show it to a few close painters to see what they thought i dont think i would show the whole world, but like i said, i wont ever be good enough, so it dosent really matterlol

Chrisp... has a really good idea about tuning your mini in advance- just don\'t let anyone know what its there for to get some honest feedbacks, THEN go back and woodshed it a bit more. Just smart is all. There is a lot to be said about putting pressure on yourself too to wait for last minute, gets those improv juices flowing too.
