Hi!

I'm planning to buy some pots from the Vallejo Game Color line. The thing is, i don't want to buy every color, i heard that 30-40 pots should be enough for every paint job.
What do You guys think, which colors should i buy from the range? I'll paint fantasy miniatures mainly, not scifi. I know this is a weird question, because the simple answer is: buy colors what is needed for the mini! I try to avoid buying similar colors and colors that i can easily mix (1-1 ratios).

I found a forum post somewhere on the net about this topic, but i couldn't find it now, that's why i ask u guys. A list of colors would be awesome!!! :D

Thanks very much for the help ;)

We can't tell you what colours you're going to like...it's your choice, your preference, your knowledge and ability and willingness to mix up colours AND which colours you WANT to mix, etc. For example, if you like and use blues all the time, you might consider it worthwhile to buy a larger selection of blues, where as, if you don't like blue and hardly ever use it, a much smaller number of blue paints will suit you (sort of a dollar value versus time to mix up a specific colour and/or how often you use the paint value ratio).

As you say, buying them as you use them, is your best plan. The paints we use will not be the paints that you use.

I'm planning to buy some pots from the Vallejo Game Color line. VGC is a direct copy of GW old colours, why limit yourself to that range? The Vallejo Model Colour range has some 220 paints, not all of which you'll need. I do find that having that capacity is extremely handy if there's something specific I'm trying to achieve.
The thing is, i don't want to buy every color, i heard that 30-40 pots should be enough for every paint job. Yes & No
I'll paint fantasy miniatures mainly, not scifi. I definitely think you should consider the Vallejo Model Colours, as they will give you more scope for realistic materials as well as wilder colours.

Completely agree with Dragonsreach, if you're going to go to Vallejo I'd look at the Model Colour range. Also mix and match, the majority of painters on here will use paints from pretty much every range going. My palette will generally contain GW paints (current range and previous), Vallejo Model Air & P3.

Have you any specific models you're after painting and we can give a few suggestions - for example orcs will require a different set of colours to elves :)

Yep I agree, mix and match, ive been asking people for their suggestions on Vallejo also - my top 5 best colours at the moment

1. Vallejo Model Ivory (kicks the shit out of bleached bone for increasing highlights)
2. Vallejo Air silver (best metallic I have ever used)
3. GW - Scorched brown (or what ever its called now)
4. GW - shadow grey (the fang) - always using it from shadows on skin, armor , bases - everthing!
5. tamiya clear red - the absolute best for blood and gore

I'd also recommend mixing and matching, apart from anything it'll allow you to gain first-hand knowledge of more than one paint range and you may find you have definite preferences.

Actually you could make do with a lot less than this, like about a tenth of this if you didn't mind doing a lot mixing.

hi,

thanks for the comments ;)

now i see i should buy from the model color range, however, there's a few reasons why i think i'll buy from game color. i can only order them from the net, because the lack of the shops where i can find them locally. also they are pretty expensive here, so that's why i want to order paints to cover a large area of the color wheel. i can't tell what i will paint, as i have models that are waiting for painting. humans, beasts, elves, goblins, etc. also i have 10 pots of the game color range (and paints from a warhammer paint set), the basic colors, but i think i have limited possibilities with these few paints. for example i can't mix purple from red and blue, no metter how hard i try :)
also i think i'm an absolute beginner painter and i can live with the game color range .. for now. oh ... and another thing! i can order a pot of GC for 1.49 gbp each and MC for 1.79 gbp .. that's 20% difference which is huge. if you know cheaper than this in europe, please let me know.

so the conclusion i think is: i'll choose a set of colors for general painting, and than if i miss some colors i'll buy more. when i feel like i could try paints from different manufacturers/lines, i'll try them. first i have to practice brush control, paint consistency, mixing, etc.

okay, now another question :D
what do you suggest to buy other than normal general colors? what should i keep in mind? for example:
- paints for skins (base/shadow/highlight)
- metallics? how many pots of gold/silver?
- washes? every color? or just a few of them and i can mix the rest?

again .. thanks for the advices guys!!! ;)
