Self scoring?

Just a question...am I the only one who finds it...bad form, I guess...to give yourself a 10 when you post a mini?

If this has been discussed before, point me to the bowl of wet noodles and I shall make like a Sigmarite...

I think that it is pretty bad form to give yourself a big fat 10 to start, as the psychology of voting is that the people seeing that at the start will bring you straight back down to earth with some low votes to equalise things (it does happen!).

I always use the default and allow the voters to decide. That\'s the best way by far and I feel that maybe all should default to 5 or 6 when first published, after which the voters take you to the correct rating (over time).

But what about giving your figure a 1?

Well here\'s the thing, Sparky.
If you start low the only way to go is up. Therefore I would advise you, like Reverend suggests, to take the default score.
In most cases the scores will climb reasonably well with each vote, except when someone deliberatley hammers you with a \'downer\'.
What I found is that even though you think it\'s the best thing since bread was sliced, if you put an initial high score then each subsequent lower score drags you down.
There was a serious rant on the forums about how to get an 8 on this site. I think that the author had suffered the same fate as one or two others had with initial high scores.
It was only when I had to sort out a formula for someone in \"Excel\" that the \"D\'uh\" moment hit me and I did a quick experiment with averages. Boy did I feel a Dumb ass. lol

can\'t say i agree with you guys here. why, getting flamed.
go check out my Wolf Lord, he got flamed. the mini\'s not a 3, but thats what he got voted.
i voted honestly on another mini, bingo, the big 3 shows on a well done gaming piece.
so why not pat yourself on the back, if it\'s your best work, if it\'s \"your\" ten?!?
it\'s going to go through correction anyways. it\'s like NYSE, the correction will come!!

There is obviously a balance...

If I see an \'iffy\' mini and the poster has given it a big fat 10, the natural reaction is to slam it. I don\'t, because I feel that sort of undermines the spirit of the site. When I say I don\'t, I mean I don\'t give it a 1 or 2. If I am in any doubt about say a 4 or a 5, I will go for the lower score however.

If I see a half reasonable mini and the poster has given it a 1, I kinda feel that the painter needs his/her esteem boosting and whilst I will not significantly over rate it, I will certainly give them the benefit of the doubt if I am undecided.

However....after voting on thousands and thousands of minis I have only ever come a cross a couple of examples where I am the second voter, but thats \'cos I look at them in random order, so it hardly ever happens.:bouncy:

I vote my own minis what I really think they are worth. After voting on thousands of minis here, I have a good sense of where my stuff fits in.
I\'ve never started a mini high (except my first one or two possibly, because I didn\'t understand the scale) and the mini I started with a 1 has risen to I think a 2.4 but I still think it deserves a 1

I\'m along the lines of vince...I try to put a score on my minis that I believe I would give that mini if someone else had painted it.

I just was wondering because there are a few people who I always see giving themselves 10\'s and it irks me.

Course my two newest posts I think are getting hammered a little, but I digress.

If it irks you, it will undoubtedly irk other people and the goodwill/benefit of the doubt, that is lost will soon compensate for the initial three or four point gain.
As any politician could confirm, it doesn\'t pay to upset the voters.lol

Speaking of scores, what is average.

One would assume that this is 5. However, I think it may not be. 5 is table top quality, but I consider 2-3 to be table top, and 5 what I would consider good table top.

Might even help the people who think 6 is something to be ashamed of.

How do you know?

How can you tell what someone rates their own mini? Unless you are the first person to vote on it after it is posted? Also, why after you rate your mini initially do you get to vote on it? It sounds like you get to vote on your own work twice. Personally, I think in the end the crowd will even it all out whether you go 1 or 10. The only advantage I see, and I fall victim to it also, is that if you see the average scores before you vote you\'re more likely to skew your vote toward the norm, not wanting to rock the CMON boat.

I see it often enough from one or two people (I will not name names) that it caused me to ponder it a bit. Maybe I just happen to catch their posts early enough to see it, I don\'t know...

i started a thread in the feedback forum suggesting a the same thing, because i never know what to rate my mini its difficult to be impartial on your own work, and your holding it in your hands

Uhm..., Whenever I post a mini (Yes, on BOTH times within a year ), I usually give it MY current average score. From then on, it goes up or down according to the popular vote (wich is fine by me)

Then again, I do have more than five minis with more than 50 votes each, so I appear within the ranks.

Before that, I think I recall there was the possibility to post a picture and not giving it a score to begin with, but that has changed now, so, I\'d rather give it a 5 and watch the numbers move.

I agree wholeheartedly with Dragonsreach when he says that if you start too high, the only movement you are going to see is down, and that kinda kills the fun of posting.
