My first thought was Tooshy was hitting the sauce again, and I wanted some too. lol

It reminded me of my college days when we wrote stories like \'Guilty Looks Enter Tree Bares\' which started: \"Wants prawn a term...\"

Cheers Tooshy (i\'ve got my gin in hand),

I got that mail about a year ago, and my co-worker and me were sending e-mails all day whit toshe siftehd lteerts :bouncy:

About what finn said: this is not a property of the text, but has to do with the font. Every good font, or handwriting should still be readable when covered for 50%.

You are right. But it is deeper than that.

Almost all language is \'content rich\' ie it contains far more information than the essential message. You can take a sample of speech and remove 50%of it, providing it is evenly spread, and it is still perfectly understandable.

The text/font trick only works with written languages that write against a bottom line. Only the top of the font varies in size and shape and this gives the necessary cues.

aaaaaaah i see ;)

no, all present and correct other than the \'with\' which needs the h at the end so should be \'wtih\'

other than that, I am not sure why i couldnt read it! my brain kept changing \'those\' into \'tooshy\'! ???

i\'m very happy now, because when i type quickly, i have the tendency to \'mistype\' the order of the letters....now I know people can still understand me, no need to read over my posts anymore...:)

Why English is so hard....

I can prove that this word:

ghoti

Says \'fish\'

It\'s not a trick, there is nothing devious.

I am sure one of you clever clogs will get it though:D

oh gosh i remember studying this, in some word in the english language \"gh\" is pronounced \"f\" and so on and so forth and i think one of the words is nation, or something?

i think the gh in enough gives you the f
the the ti in nation gives you the sh

Get a book \"Why Johnnie cann\'t read\" It explains the difference between reading & work guessing. The problem is that so many of us don\'t read, we word guess.
Of course skilled readers word guess rather than \'read\'...like skilled mathematicians subitise rather than use their fingers.

It\'s not a \'problem\' however, because most of us are so good at word guessing that we understand print faster, and with the same accuracy, as if we \'read\' it.

When we listen we don\'t consciously decode langauge, we just pick up cues and guess at the \'gist\'. That is why there are so many misunderstandings

Generally, normal human beings will get the \'gist\' if provided with only 10% of the information content of any sensory input.
Which is pretty clever really:D

I thought \'word guessing\' would almost be a prerequisite of \'fast reading\'.
But as my youngest daughter is still struggling with some reading, I find that her problem is that she is guessing on words (especially the big ones).

So there seems to be a fine line between profecient reading using word guessing (which I know I do) and learning to read using it.
