...Below is my wip thread...

I definitely remember admiring the Minotaur at the Capital Palette. Keep up the good work, Derek. You have some natural talent, and now it's just a matter of practice and development. I look forward to seeing what pieces you bring next year!

Thanks! Im looking forward to next year. I seem to be in a less than motivated mood lately so I am hoping that will fade and I can feel like painting some more soon.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Yeah, turns out I assembled the mini wrong. I thought I had it right, based on how the ball-and-socket seemed to fit, and I figured the pose was supposed to represent her running.

But, yeah, this is what she's supposed to look like.... That said, I don't know if this pose is any less awkward!

A massive build session today. All of these models went from blister/box to current form. It might not look like a lot, but filing every mold line on every piss-fiddly appendage really adds up, not to mention gluing them with 5-minute, 2-part epoxy. Every base has a zinc washer mounted on the underside for magnetized transport. The large bases require patties of milliput on the underside so that the washers have something to adhere to. As I learned a while back with the Howard Langston model, trying to glue multiple legs with only a speck of surface area on an unstable model is a real trial in patience.

And to think I was going to actually get all of these primed today....

This is in preparation for Battle for Salvation in October, a tournament near New York City, where our Malifaux Monday gaming group will be carpooling to play in the Malifaux tournament. The 4 goblins on the left (by Northumbrian Tin Soldier) will be proxies for Metal Gamin. Also seen, from left to right: Mobile Toolkit, 3 Steampunk Arachnids (in bag), Large Steampunk Arachnid, 2 Night Terrors (in bags), Willie, Soulstone Miner.

One reason for the cram-session is that we're going to practice the tournament scenarios at Malifaux Monday. With the first scenario a super-killy one (Reckoning, plus Assassinate, Breakthrough, et al), I really needed an aggressive and survivable mix. This Ramos crew will feature both Joss and Howard Langston, supported by the Large Steampunk Arachnid, Willie, Soulstone Miner, plus 2 Metal Gamin to compensate for my low headcount.

Some color-sketching to see what direction to go with these characters.

On the left, should those shoulder pads be the same color as the armor plates, or should I go a bone color as an accent to the uniform? I'm leaning towards the latter, but I could go either way.

For the lizard dude, keep the cloak red and risk a Christmas theme, or go purple or violet? I think any of them would work. I'm actually OK with the red, but the purple/violet is appealing, too. I'll ask my buddy for whom I'm painting the figures which one he prefers.

Hey Shades, I think I agree with you on both, the bone accent and purple/violet. What feed back did you get from your buddy?

Thanks, guys!

As usual, another project interjects itself into the current one. I need to finish all of these miniatures in one week, in time for the Malifaux tournament at Battle for Salvation in New York.

Thanks, Stefan! Yup, I know. I was going to see if I could pull off "both": 1) a glow deep inside the armor to suggest a supernatural inhabitant, as well as 2) a peripheral glow around the orange. For instance, all of those visor slits have a prep-line of pure white inside them, but you just can't see it. Still needs work, but it might not work at all, simply because there's just not enough area to see the "inside" parts.

This is why it's safer to experiment on gaming miniatures. I can learn what works and doesn't work, before I attempt something for a display figure!
