I find that for linen style cloth, such as most robes, mixing a bone color with a little brown for the base coat and then adding more and more white for the highlights gives a good result. It works well for white too. Just make the final highlight pure white rather than a mix of bone and white.

It \'d be useful to know what are you doing first. Do you prime black, white or grey?. What colors are you using for the cloth?.
As a rule of thumb, cloth doesn\'t require too sharp highlights, but it does require careful shading most of the time.
A common method for shading (and one that is much too abused sometimes), is to paint an area with the base color, and then applying inks to the recesses. The trick for shading is to pick the correct hue of ink (or wash of paint) to do it.
A newbie might think that black would be the color to use for ALL shading, but that is not true. You have to pick a darker shade of the very same base color you are working with, like say, orange for shading yellow.
Often you can get all sorts of different effects depending on the color you select for shading (using chestnut ink also works well for shading the warmer hues of yellow, for example).
