Shading Orange

In about four years of painting minis, I've only used orange for extreme highlights on some reds. I've never actually painted anything orange.

I'm in the midst of putting together a Bretonnian army and I'm working on some Knights of the Realm. One of their caparisons will be painted alternating blue and orange.

I put down the base coats (mecharius(sp?) solar orange and mordian blue) and suddenly realized I have no idea what to do about shading.

My initial thought was to shade with scorched brown or something similar, adding it to the base color and then applying it that way. That said, I'm wanting to move fairly quickly on these models and so I've used mostly washes for quick shading, painting on highlights beginning with the original base coat.

Is there a wash that would be a good shade for orange? Devlan Mud perhaps? Gryphonne Sepia? Or someone had sad Baal Red even, though for some reason I'm not so sure about that one. Maybe a mixture of the two? (whichmay come out quite a bit like Sepia to begin with...)

If I were painting the shading onto the model would you suggest I use browns? Or deep reds? Something else?

As for highlights, I'm assuming yellows, but if anyone has other ideas...

I'd shade with a red-orange to a dark red.

Highlight up with yellow.

Giving Orange Depth

Depending on what color range of orange you are looking for, Primary Orange opposed to Earthy Orange, makes a big difference. Earthy Orange I usually base coat in Bestial Brown and use a Brown wash. I then paint the highlights with increasing amount of Blazing Orange until the last highlight is only Blazing Orange.
For Primary Orange I use Blazing Orange as the base and once again use a Brown wash to get my deepest darks. I then highlight in increasing amount of Rotting Flesh, with the last highlight being 90% Rotting Flesh and 10% Blazing Orange.

Would you wash with a dark red like Baal Red and then come back over the mids with the original base or do you think that would make things more red than orange?

Rotting flesh? Really?

Doesn't that have a slight greenish cast to it? Wouldn't something like bleached bone be better?

For these figures I used a chestnut wash with a bit of purple. The purple darkened it to my taste but just the chestnut would do for a smoother shade.
