shameless article translation

Hey people. Most of you will remember my article \"2004: a year in miniatures\". When looking at the number of views the article has, and the numerous positive comments, I\'m quite proud about this text, in which I\'ve put a reasonable amount of time.

But today I stumbled across this: http://www.gioconomicon.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=661

That\'s right, the exact same article, only translated into Italian. The writer credits my name, but I don\'t remember him asking me, or anyone from the CMON staff for permission.

This makes me a bit angry, because
a) it\'s my work only, no one else should get away with copying my text
b) I wrote it for CMON alone. The article also isn\'t featured on my own site, so I just did this for CMON, and the community.

I guess I\'m just going to ask this italian guy to remove the article from his site.

What do you guys think?

Yep I hear where you’re coming from...

I did read the English article and I think it was quite an excellent article. It would be a shame to deny the Italian community the literature because of their lack of manners. (Credit was given, and site was sourced)

Since the act was nothing more than promoting a hobby we all enjoy so much I would suggest maybe you can work something out with the guy, instead of purging the Italian article all together.

Yup ,but it sure would have been nice for him to ask. Plagerism is alive and well still I see. I wonder what the laws on that are:eek:

Corvus, I can see your point of view, but also remember that the motivation here is that your work was so appreciated that someone felt it was worth the time to translate to share with a larger audience.

I think it\'s up to you to decide what you want to do, and I think you\'re totally justified in whatever you decide, but whatever happens, don\'t let it discourage you from doing another version! I\'m already looking forward to your \'05 edition. :)

I\'ve sent the webmaster an email asking him to remove the article. Let\'s hope he replies :)

Well asking is the proper thing to do. But then again if he gave you credit I don\'t really see a probleme. The more people read article the better they become and it helps promot the hobby. I don\'t really see in what way it may bother you that an article wich is credited to you be up on an other site.

The main reason I want the article to be removed is that I made it for CMON, as some way of saying \"thank you\" to the staff, artists and members. I mean, the fact that this article isn\'t published on my own site says enough I think.

And the article is MY property, so I want to control where it is published and how.

He credited you and the site so it\'s not plagiarism.

To my mind, if you post on the internet, you have to expect exposure.

I would consider it flattering....

Is there any image text etc on your own site that you have credited, but may not have asked permission about???

I do it all the time..I just posted a thread about Warmachine resin casts and shamelessly linked to their own images.

They could sue my arse, for what it\'s worth, but I would guess they will regard it as free advertising.

Isn\'t that what\'s just happened to you???

I wish to apologyse with Corvus, I can assure I\'ve good intentions, I wish only that italian guys that don\'t know english can enjoy your article, there are no intentions of take any merit.

You\'re totally right and is my shame to have no ask you the permission to translate, but I think (wrong) that putting all the credits and a link to the original article was sufficent.

As you ask they\'ll remove the article, but I wish to praise you to let them keep it, If you wish I\'ll remove my name at all, but don\'t deny who don\'t know english to share your work.

Alternately, if you agree, I can post my translate here on CMON and link it, in this manner it will remain on CMON, just I hope they don\'t mind about having same article in different language.

I hope you\'ll forgive me, next time I\'ll ask first and then hit the keyboard :(

I know Zerloon because he\'s a regular poster in the Italian GW forum and I\'m sure he have not intention to \"bribe\" the article.

Allright.

This wasn\'t really what I had in mind, but I have to agree with Rebecca that your public apology is quite impressive. It takes a bit of courage to do such a thing, certainly on the internet, where you can hide behind your keyboard and nickname :)

If you\'ve asked me before, I probably would have said no, but right now the damage is done so to speak, and you also have put quite some time in the translation I suppose. So for this time only, I want to grant Zerloon, and the Gioconomicon site the right to keep the translated article online.

The internet is about links. If everyone started copying content from other sites to put it onto their own, then people who put up articles and pictures up for free would very soon stop doing this. It\'s cool to have an article that is features one one site, and people linking to it. A lot of motivation would be lost by article authors if everyone started copying everything.

I hope I have come up with a good solution, but please don\'t let this ever happen again.

Well a peaceful solution to a potentailly nasty situation.

I think that kudos goes to Zerloon for the courage to post a public apology and even more kudos to Corvus for the magnanimous return gesture in allowing the article to remain.

Well done, to both of you.

And Zerloon, welcome to the forums.
