Should real person minis be \"handled\" with greater care?

Well,I am not what you would call your average chauvinist stereotype but seeing Tales of War minis refer to King Leonidas of Sparta,(an actual historical figure,not mythological) as \"Mercenary\":eek:,well that just doesn\'t seem right.It\'s like labelling Napoleon a warboss or Joahn of Arc a sellsword.Perhaps I am wrong but I would really like your opinion on that one.

I would imagine that this is a case of \"round hole\" meeting \"square peg\". I\'m not familiar with Tales of War, but if they\'ve got to place the mini into a category for game play, maybe that the mercenary set of rules was what they wanted it to follow.

Still, good point. Don\'t think a lot of kings were mercenaries. Maybe those who acquired the title through force, when they were younger. I suppose the only risk would be for some descendants/followers/fans to sue for slander or scream for a beheading.

It might be that te nearest translation for Professional Soldier that they wanted was \"Mercenary\".
Because after all a Mercenary was just that, a professional as opposed to a levied or volunteer soldier.

If you are going to complain about the name of the mini you might as well keep going and complain about the fact that what he is wearing isn\'t a good representation of Hoplite armour. Real Spartan Soldiers wore much more armour and clothing then this with the most noticeable absence being the Molded Bronze Breastplate.

Obviously the mini is based on the \"300\" version of Leonidas and not the historical figure. I think with any game you have to allow for artistic license as well as game license. Personally I\'m rather frustrated by the rush of histoically innacurate minis that followed the release of 300, but I\'m sure not everyone shares my opinion.

I\'m not so upset about the titles they might use, but rather the way they are sculpted. Pirate women annoy me no end, for example, because they almost always look like prostitutes. Some of them weren\'t much better in reality, but the slutty pirate queen is getting tiresome.

Wonder what a chaste pirate queen might look like? Maybe some old style school marm with a bun hairdo, an eye patch and a foul mouthed parrot! lol

Well historically innacurate it may not be, but it does score well with me in the \"cool\" factor and i think I may pick one up. I like the comic booky/warhammerish exzagerated pose.

As to respecting the original source, well I guess it\'s more an homage to a real person. Like seeing a BobbleHead version of a real dude. Nobody is saying their heads are that big (Except for Barry Bonds. Maybe Micheal Jordan. Oooh and Liam Gallagher. And, ah never mind) but it is something made that people can identify with the real article.

Mercenary? Depends on the game system. Guns for hire and Dogs of War or whatever the system may be it doesn\'t NECCESSARILY have to have the negative connotation some may place on the word in todays terms.

Cool fig! And I would reather see MORE sluttiness when it comes to my female pirate models. I saw this crappy 3-part documentary \"Pirates of the Carribean\" and it seems female pirates WERE pretty hot \'n slutty.

Female figs tend to look slutty in general, which I find annoying. I love pirate models - but no way am I getting any of the female ones. It would be like slutty, pirate Barbie.

Ok here is my view I guess (you might not agree... lol) but if think a mini ... or tiny statue should be handled with great care and dignity... then why across america do we have statues of prominent figures (IE george washington, Abrham lincon, etc etc) full of pigeon poop?

I totally agree with you.It is an exact copy of the movie character and I don\'t expect him to be a historicaly accurate sculpt. My only objection is the label \"Merc\" as it is nowadays very misunderstood and nevertheless Leonidas was never one anyway. King? yes.Leader? yes. Warrior? yes.General? sure. But mercenary???

Why would anyone be bothered by little toy soldiers beeing historically incorrect? I respect you opinion, but I really don`t get it.
They are not meant to be shown in schools or something like that, they are for gaming or for looking cool on in your cabinet.
I would understand someone having concerns about a Hitler mini, but thats because he still has living victims and followers. Leonidas on the other hand has no political relevance at all.

As to the sluttyness: I confess beeing attracted to slutty minis :drunk:
but I would like to see some who are not so ill proportioned. I bought some GW dark-eldar slaves for a diorama and they simply look ridiculus. Their boobs are bigger than their heads! Guess the sculptor was a nerdy manga-freak who has never seen a real girl :twisted:

But the historical meaning of Merc was a sell-sword. One who has no allegence to a country, only fights for money. As opposed to professional soldier - who usually fought for his country.

Just throwing my 2 coppers into the pot.

If anything I think that they would get in trouble for having iconography from the movie without permission. Like the iconography on the shield. Unless that is what all spartan shields looked like, I do not know much about them historically.

According to dictionary.com one of the many definitions of mercenary is: hired to serve in a foreign army, guerrilla organization, etc. With this in mind one could say that he founded his own guerrilla organization in the context of the movie, again I do not know much about him historically, picking the best 300 and doing what they do best.

Seems like if that is what they would get in trouble for. I remember JMD had the first version of their 54mm daemonette and GW pounced on their ass for it even though there was no actual GW visual references, in my opinion. Not like it was covered in slaanesh symbols. I think that any model that needs a crab arm and horns should have one without GW throwing a fit.
