Showing images actual size

Hi,

Assuming I am using a screen at 96dpi (a default setting for many monitors), is there any way I can measure a photo to show a mini at actual size? I use Gimp if that's of any use....

Or even if there is a 96dpi image of a ruler to show a scale that I can overlay as a layer.... thoughts/ideas appreciated. I'm doing this to show my mini photos to some friends and want to show as close to actual size...

A simple way would be to print out the image as it is currently in the computer. Measure the size that the mini comes out on the paper and work out by how much it needs to be reduced. Use that to scale the image in the computer. I realise that this is quite time consuming and wasteful but it is, at least, easy.

The best way to show size is to photograph the mini together with a ruler, otherwise it gets kinda tricky.

The size of the image shown is always dependant on the resolution of the monitor and the zoom of the picture. Not to mention photographing distance and other factors. The simplest way to get the mini to be the right size on -your- monitor is to simply hold the mini to the screen, zoom the original picture until it matches and then print screen. That way you get an image that shows the mini the right size in the right resolution for the screen you're using but as soon as anyone with a different resolution or size of their screen the image will be off.

I bet there are loads of other ways to do this as well but this is the way I find to be the easiest.

Yeah, the actual size of the object in the image will naturally vary with their resolution so if you don't have the same settings I don't have a solution to the issue. Perhaps you can use some webapplication with a suitable script, but I'm not sure.

And I think it's better to use a reference object, like a ruler, and a larger sized photo. There won't be much details seen in a 28mm part of the screen.
