I went the cowards way out and picked models with belly you know that part of the book that states"the amount of gradiant increase is directly proportionate to the degree of the slope" so the part that further embellished on this is aND says torso to belly and belly to sides have two curves going on a gentle curve top to bottom not crazy shading and the belly to sides big slope =much shading and this helped me with the belly area which I've always struggled wit.another thing that helped was clarifying that the base color = midtone and this = AREAS OF LARGE WITH THE TORSO AND TOP OF LEGS ETC.-THIS BEING AN INTERMEDIATE COLOR WHICH I address after the main shading and some first stage highlighting. This helped me clear up not using just a single type of shading blended in.but more tonal variation.anyways this helped me out.nout . now after all the global shading is done and highlighting to some degree it's a matter of picking out each bulge and adressing it as a geometric shape.what colors it gets depends upon the rules above of which part gets the midtone and stop sign rule tactic.it's really a matter of thinking the way he does and adopting that in your routine the more you reread it and then paint reinforces what's going on.

Hmmm

MAybe mortarion AND a grin added to perturbo and fulgrim...holy sHite that might just win me a grand prize of 2-1000 dollars I cannot win the 10,000 one as I'm not stupid these guys are better period no punches pulled.aND one of those dudes is our own baily, while I really try to keep him thinking I'm a great competitor he needs to worry about in the historical the truth is he knows how good he is and knows nobody there can touch him in any category he enters he's UNREAL,me a threat ,I'm always fighting for 2nd or third when I enter a category he's in,he's ridiculous with every type of skill from blending to freehand.you guys know we're all the MOST critical of our painting but when I sat down with David powell and he showed me some tips,he simply said in his calm energetic voice " IT TO OK ME A BETTER PART OF A YEAR BUT IM FINA LLL HAPPY WITH MY PAINTING!" WHEN SOME ONE THAT GOOD KNOW that then everybody is in trouble..you guys see it in pictures you have no idea how good he is,but he does.and I'm telling everyone now this man will eventually win 10,000 dollars more than once...he is a gem of a guy and me and janet absolutely LOVE this man...in a sentence he is a beautiful human being..if there were more bailys there would be heaven on earth no wars no suffering and oh yeah everybody would win 10,000 dollar checks...lol

What Zab said. To be fair I think any of the dark Primarchs would look pretty good under your brush. I'm not that much of a fan of the sculpt of Mort though, I think it lacks something and I'm not sure what. Emo wolverine is cool though

Very kind, BAM. Though, to be honest, it took me a hell of a lot longer than a year to be happy with my painting! However for the last year or so I've been pretty satisfied with the figures I've been doing. Just don't confuse being happy with being content or complacent! I'm still trying to improve with each figure. There are so many super talented painters out there, I doubt I'd ever be able to win the top prize at a show as competitive as the Crystal Brush. But I believe my knight got 7th overall this past year, so maybe one of these times I could find a way to sneak up into that 3rd spot. Just when I start to think 'hey, the historical categories shouldn't be too hard' I get guys like you and Tom Ales entering stuff in all those categories as well (Tom's sci-fi vehicle entry was 4th overall, just shy of the top three). So I keep working and hopefully my stuff next year will be even better!

Getting back to your project... if you're doing a display base for the squad, there's no reason you couldn't have 'good' primarchs like Guilliman, Vulkan, and Ferrus on one side facing off against the 'bad' primarchs like Horus, Perturabo, Curze, Mortarion, Angron, and Fulgrim on the other. Pick the ones you'd like to paint and then use the base/scenery to tell whatever story you want.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head there. That is exactly what I got from the book but I have found some parts of the book contradict other parts, not in a sence that hes cancelling it out. but more where each tech is situational and depends on what your painting.

the other things thats been drilled into me is try and visualise and plan your model and pallet before you even hit it with any kind of paint.. work out where your light sources are, work out what you are actaully trying to get across the to the view, work out what kind of painting you want to do. Once that is mapped out you go and and add volume and shape the the gobal volumes on the mini. Once that is done you go in and define each of the smaller shapes.

I've read the book front to back and now its time to paint while reading to get everything to sink in. The colour section makes the light and shadow section make sence, but there is so much information that is impossible to take it all in. You need to reread everything, paint time, go back read, paint, read paint so you get everything to sink in. There is much I don't fully grasp but like i've said once I start painting with the book next to me open it will give me a solid foundation.

One thing the book doesnt do is each you how to paint. the author kind of assumes that you already know how to paint and the book is more ginding a good theory into you to help you use you express your minis better and make better choices with your colours.

its the best money I've sent in a long long time

Really really into this latest primarch you're doing. Looking to be one of your top pieces even at this stage. Your contrast on every shape has gone way up and colors really stand out. I gotta get my nose into that book some more, it's really flipped a switch on your painting.

TThanks scherds so so much and epic your right it's situational remeber he's even said that on his pied piper he used both zenithal.just lighting on some parts and general on others if it looks good to you who cares. Remeber as well that book is very dense with material some things you get right from reading it and somethings sink in during those a ha moments when you paint down the road just read and paint and it will develop into your routine with his outline in mind it Def is like relearning how to paint but to get better you and I are willing to do that.:)

WTF dude, stop improving NOW!! LOLOLOLOL Give me a chance ...

Bro, this is fantastic, I am speachless
Yeah what Tero said. I do have a question though, what you going to do when you run out of mini's to paint? I mean there is a finite number before you actually have painted all the minis.
