After 8 hours today on various things I will revisit the skirt tomorrow and bring this and the leather straps up to the same standard of the other two after that the boots on the Thracian and tidying up and odds and ends. Dark and gritty but I can't show you good pics cause Janet has commandeered the camera tinight so she was nice enough to at least let me use her iPhone as pics on my iPhone 4(yes I still have an I phone 4) suck. So just think how much more beautiful they really look on a real cera. Anyway I promise posts 1x or 2x a day. So here's my 1post today... Good night and see ya tomorrow. Ps I'm getting tired of our realtor not calling back so it's time for a bit of a sit down .... View attachment 53868View attachment 53869

A knack for picking models

I don't think anybody ever painted this in the last 4 years of crustal brush so ....well... This is what my large monster category entry will be this year . Now just gotta hope I can paint him up really well....

He's a neat looking guy. I don't remember seeing him in any of the CB photos, though it's possible someone entered him and missed the cut. But I think it's unlikely he's been entered.

The gladiators look great. Excellent skintones, great metals, and the colors give the group a nice sense of cohesiveness.

One suggestion for a hidden detail you may want to add. I painted up Otho back when he was first released. I thought it was a nice little touch to put some tally marks on the inside of his shield to count the gladiators he's defeated. To be honest, I saw someone else do that on a historical gladiator figure (I forget who) and 'borrowed' the idea from them. So feel free to borrow the idea from me if you like it. Don't go overboard with it, just keep it a small detail as a surprise for people who look closely at the figures.

You may already have plans for the bases, but if not, baking soda can be used to create a sand-like texture. Be sure to use it with white glue (I put the glue down first and then sprinkle on the baking soda). If you combine baking soda and superglue it creates a reaction that produces heat. Not fun when the glue is on your hand and you touch the baking soda by accident!

If it helps, here's a link to my finished version of Otho. You can see the sand base and, of course, bloodstains in the sand. If I know anything about you, I'm sure you were planning to add plenty of those!

Okay folks another entry done . The bases were from a simple tutorial by Ollie spath(honor guard) the studio painter for arena rex. As he stated they are a simple but interaction style base that showcases the figure itself. Overall they are looking for well painted models when judging .so it's a simulation of sand that upon deeper scrutiny reveals tiny footprints all over as an arena would have when gladiators fight all day long.

Totally done just waiting for a base / plinth Etc. but here's the photos of these guys (my hist group) for crystal brush. My first time doing models that are smaller in scale compared to the 54mm I ussually do. They now have some trophies and miscellaneous details at the bases of the model , my signature skulls, and at the feet of the Thracian I found a sword hilt that resembles a gladius. Enjoy.
