Waiting for postal to deliver my last final Viking so I started an idea I had awhile back . The goal was to do "-dint have any heart attacks out there-the goal was to do a diorama Or a vignette much bigger than I've ever attempted" I like the thought of zombies and someone being chased. It's really my HO to project on the sidelines when I'm waiting other things and priorities . So the start is these guys the pants on one is not going to stay it was a way to see a scheme . So make if them what you will and you never know one day you'll see quite a Lil scene on a 50-60 mm base.View attachment 43282

By the way I've got my model ill be painting for the large model category here he is I'm one of only 250 made:

The zombies were looking pretty cool and then you showed me this guy - he is just made of awesomesauce! What scale/size is he? And where is he from? And when are you going to start painting him? And what colours are you thinking of?

HAha ....shel you sound like a reporter for the daily planet.lololol ok so he's 75mm ,huge.he's from wonderland projects..he is 250 resin cast limit.and they stipulate there will be NO MORE cast once the 250 stamped models are gone.the story goes that a canvas artist and illustrator sent an illustration in to a friend at wonderland.they were so impressed they asked their sculptors immediately to start work on a 3d model of the sampled shark day pic.when I saw this ,the amazing work on this piece I had to ask for it joy for christmas.... (OHHHHHH JAAAAAANNNNEEET!) LOL THANKs krule.

Everybody stay tuned.

Oh and almost forgot, any and every model I paint I always stick to the boxart........for one reason tell me if this makes sense....when we all see a model painted for advertisementwe say .....I want that model, what we really mean is I want that "painted version" ..but we can't cause they don't sell it.it's part of a studio plethora.so me painting it to the level of the boxart gives me my model.;)

This is true - we usually fall in love with a version of the mini as it's painted. But every once in a while it'll be the sculpt that catches your eye and the box art does nothing for you.

I like to paint the image I have in my head. Sometimes this matches the box art, but otherwise I seem to like making my life difficult by starting from scratch.

i am really a bit torn about this one. it is a cool one mini - i jumped on wonderland projects indiegogo 'bout this particular mini like 1½ years ago, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/wonderlands-project-maxim-verehin-s-shark-day-miniature#/

sadly to say this campaign was/is very poorly run, at best (ok f*cking poor shit) we who funded the making of this mini have not received any reward yet still they started to sell it at the figone store in may this year i think. wonderland projects have really run out of excuses and personally i will never buy anything from them ever again and it actually put me off indiegogo/kickstarter at all.

That sounds pretty crappy and has been one of the big complaints about crowd sourcing. I feel your frustration.

I completely understand that point of view and have fallen into the same mindset on more than one occasion.
BUT it's good to challenge yourself to step away from the box art, I've recently purchased something on eBay which came with an additional figure. It's that additional figure I'll be 'challenging' myself to do from scratch.

I can thoroughly appreciate that.
Being let down like that is poor. Thankfully I've never been let down.

Nice work on the Zombies Papa , I thought you may have gone in another direction with your style with the striped pants and cleaner paint which I was hopeing for. I have always said I want to see some of your stuff super clean not in a cartoony way but super clean life like. I think you would smash it.

I'm eager to see what you do with the sharkman... and I, for my part, hope you go in another direction from the box art. I cannot figure out what the caucasian skin tone is for. At first I thought it was like some Hawaiian sunset OSL, but it isn't carried onto the back. It may be a lack of knowledge of sharkman biology on my part, but I'm a little confused.

In regards to you box art comment, I had a few thoughts. I definitely agree with what DR said. First off, you should be painting to make yourself happy and if you want the box art version then, by all means, do that one. Since I do a lot of historical figures, often I follow the box art because that's what the uniform is supposed to look like! However I often try to make some small change if I can just to make the figure my own. For something like the shark, where the figure is based on an illustration, I tend to go to the source material for my paint scheme. If you can find the art it is based on, sometimes I'll find that there have been small changes to make a figure easier to cast and mass produce. There are a couple figures where I've made minor conversions to bring them closer to the original artwork. Not required of course, but something to think about.

As for whether or not you should follow the box art, there are pluses and minuses. From the standpoint of competition, if you follow the box art you're most likely going to be compared to it. And considering the box artists is typically pretty damn good, that can be a risk! So doing something new/different with the figure could help you stand out in a competition. On the other hand, there's a reason it's the box art. The color choices are probably good ones. So being different just to be different may push you in sub optimal directions. In the end, my suggestion is however you paint it, either like the box art or differently, just make sure you've got a reason behind why you're doing it that way. By the way, you can follow the box art but then do something different with the base/scene in order to put your own spin on the figure.

As for this shark, taking a look at the concept art (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TSfVxFd_T...Ac60vV_dQU/s1600/20131209070142-Shark_Day.jpg), the sculpt and paint job are very close to what's there. I was a bit confused by the cream to grey transition in the skin color on the figure, but from the artwork I see it's a lighting thing. I'm not so sure it's successful on the figure, so I might avoid doing that. I think it would be difficult to make the effect convincing on the figure. Another change I might make would be the mermaid's hair. You don't see it in the art, so it could be whatever you want. I'd think about doing red hair, so you get people to do a double take and think, wait, did that shark just capture Ariel?!? Maybe it's poor taste, but I think that would be funny.

Obviously you can ignore any or all of those suggestions. It's just my take on the figure, but you should do whatever you think will look best and go for the version you want!

Wowzers alot of good feedback on this.baily I agree with you and meph also....
Saint toad...it's a fantasy piece think bout it.would folks dare say a cock attics is the wrong colors ...not really ..the thing is they don't exist so this is what the artist feels is his rendition of these schemes they use.other than that I love the red hair idea.baily knows me and some of the things I've done like my skaven rat ogre"road to mordheim" there is a dead infant on a pike impaled....so as far as "poor taste"it's my middle name..lololol .
And I just realized that I use box art as a general reference but when I choose colors they are different hues..just as david said.
Thanks everyone for a wo derail discussion on something I thought would be otherwise a boring issue.
