I'll be doing my sbs snowy bases tutorial today at some point. As for now ,ide like to put up some images that show the two different styles that coexist in the fine art of miniature model painting. The first 3 are the "style of realism" I've picked these as they will show the differences in comparison to the comic/animated/ cartoon style.

Realism :

comic/cartoon style :

Whatever you you decide to do even if you use a combination of the two, enjoy yourself and the pleasure this hobby brings to all of us!

That slaughterpriest looks great mate. When it comes to the different styles I generally prefer the realistic style but whenever I paint it seems to gravitate towards the cartoony style, it could just be because I tend to end up with a cartoony style that I like realistic more, but if I painted more realistically then I'd like cartoony style more

Yeah that's normally what happens. For the longest time I painted almost like a pastel cartoonish type models. Then I finally did what I call visual / mimicking or visual research and that is literally trying to copy all the models I thought had what I wanted. A big one for me was David ridriguez (karaekal) I think his name is. And then started living all the painters like jarhead etc. needless to say after many failed models(which each time I achieved/ learned something, which is why no model is a fail) one time I did steel right another time flesh, then leather etc. time after time it lead to muscle memory being programmed and BAM realism in a bottle. So keep striving its in the grasp!!!

SBS SNOW BASING

MATERIALS

1) any typm of scenic snow
Woodland scenics or
Gail force 9 or
MY FAVORITE SECRET WEAPON CRUSHED GLASS View attachment 52551

Now second part is valleo still water
View attachment 52552

Mix the 2 in equal amounts until it makes a slushy then simple spread on your base in diff amounts of drift and bumps. There it is as easy as that. The trick to diff drifts is to let your landscape do the work for you use diff levels of slate rock Etc. that will make a skeleton for your snow to be laid on and when dried it will look like uneven patches !!! Viola

Enjoy

Any time if you want to see it in action there's a guy named mr Justin ... A Lil wierd but a real good scenery guy. He owns a piece of secret weapon studio. He has a video called using secret weapon crushed glass. Check it out its how I learned.just be careful if you choose that brand as if you breath it in it will cut up your lungs no joke. Use a ventilator.

Thank you for sharing John! You make it look really simple, wanna gave it a try now ^^

I also voted on your last work and even favourited it. I think it is somewhat a mix of your viking and khorne groups, and the fact that there is no snow this time, makes it truly different and gaves it another colour sensations. ;)

Probably the shortest SBS out there but still informative! I never thought of mixing snow material with water effects before, but it makes perfect sense. I already use the stuff to mix with actual dirt to create a wet mud look.

The stamina of this guy! We all wish we could paint as fast and a much as you, BAM!
Love the spots on the head, on top of that terrific skintone you brought over from the previous batch of genestealers (correct?). The spots kid of emphasize the octopoid quality of the heads. These are already looking very cool!
