So if forced to choose between contemporary metal and any era of metal's glorious history, are you guys choosing those same bands or does Sabbath just tower above all competition as the first and final word in awesome?

It's possible that I may have phrased that question in a somewhat tendentious way...

Cool, I'll be cheering you on and ogling the counter girls as they stride past holding up their number signs.

Contemporary metal for sure. 'Recent' bands like Sylosis and Sybreed have given me hope again. \m/ \m/

No no no no no! Old school metal is where it's at! Well not that old, most things up to the mid 90s (but not nu metal), this is about as recent as I get (apart from dethklok but they're a joke band, like spinal tap but death metal)

And some dethklok for fun

For the sake of discussion, can we make a distinction between metal proper and heavy music in general? Now, I'm not going to determing who enters those categories (I'll leave that to experts), which I think we should call 'true metallic metal' (TMM for short) and 'non-metallic metal' (NMM), which includes music which, while stylistically similar in meaningful ways (prevalence of bass; either aggressive driving rhythms or plodding dirge-like or industrial ones; dramatic, stylized, or bombastic vocals), nevertheless encompasses elements considered anathema to the stylistic mainstream (female vocals; acoustic interludes; colored fabric). So, which do you prefer, TMM or NMM?

I guess while I have a vast diversity in metal music IDE say I'm more an old fashioned iron maiden , accept , Judas Priest , exciter , running wild JORN LANDE, Ronnie James dio etc etc... This was the most meaningful music in my growing up and I love contemporary metal some of the bands today have done something new and still maintained that metal being , but if it comes down to it toadie , IDE say 9 years old a friends hooked me onto iron maiden - revelations - was the exact song shorty after that my uncle new I was into metal and bought me a vinyl of paranoid - hooked ever since!!!

While I totally accept other people's right to choose differently, I have to say that Rage Against The Machine's first album has never been beaten. Call me a heathen if you will - But I'm right. :)

I forgot about ratm they're an exception to the rule for me. Usually for me it comes down to the guitar skill, before painting music was my passion so my tastes evolved alongside my guitar ability to further push how well I can play

Lol. Cool to hear you're a fan as well :D who'd a thunk it!

Ah Yes, oldskool nineties metal paved the way for the rest that came after. I like how the genres grew apart and then reconverged. Because the brillant stuff like ratm or Pantera was a whole differentiatie breed than Carcass or cannibal corpse and such and now you have metal with influencers of both, mixed in with other stuff. Trance-metal is surely one of the rarer breeds, Sybreed mixed some nice jungle elements in as well.

And then you've also got one-hit curiosities like this :D

Great looking unit. I don't know how you find so much time to paint. I am either too busy or too tired. Gonna have to up the caffeine or something.

I was most definitely a metalhead in my youth. Earlier this year, I went to see Sepultura for old time's sake. During the third band's set, I was pacing the dancefloor like a caged animal, and all the young people were just standing there with their phones. This place was *packed*, and yet I was worried that maybe this new generation didn't know how to mosh. Finally, there was another guy about my age (late 40's) who joined in, and when our eyes met, and we both scowled and hurled ourselves at each other, colliding in mid-air.

The whole room went up like freaking gasoline. I went at it until mid-way through Sepultura's set, when I took a pretty hard crack to the noggin. I sat out, rubbing my temple, and some guy tagged me on the shoulder with his hand as if to apologize, before drifting back into the pit. I took it easy the rest of the night. Man, was I sore the next day. I was happy though, and kinda felt like I'd passed the torch, lol.
