Shrine of the Aquila

Seems to be ages since I've actually contributed anything to here although I have been lurking in the background. Happy New Year

My current project I actually stand a chance at completing, as it picked with my girlfriend. At Christmas I was given two of the GW paint stations so we went off to the closest GW store and after a bit of diliberation picked up a Shrine of the Aqulia, with the thought that it would be a bit of a different and I could ultimately display mini's on it.

So here's the test piece for working out colours:

And heres the second (very subtle) colour on. This pic isn't anywhere near as good - bizzarly my camera seems to take something this size better using just a modelling lamp and flash :s

Aiming to do more to it over the weekend as the gf is over next weekend and I'd like it to be a bit further along I ultimately want to apply a oil wash to dirty it up (never done it before!) and need to work out how to airbrush metalics

Right, have made a little bit of progress and got the next of the outside colour airbrushed on. This piece really is massive so "a little" is quite an undertaking. However I'm making quite a decent amount of progress so it won't be long and I'll be able to take a brush to this piece. I have also played a bit with oil paint weathering, which after a bit of experimentation, I now know how I'll implement.

Anyway, enough waffle - here's the outer colour pretty much done:

Colour wise I've done the following so far:

• Chaos Black undercoat;
• Fenris Grey first colour;
• 2 x Shadow Grey + 1 x Black - gently airbrushed underneath any crevices/ledges;
• Shadow Grey;
• 1 x Shadow Grey + 1 x Space Wolves Grey;

All of the paints thinned down to around the consistency of semi-skimmed milk (perhaps a tiny fraction thicker) and airbrushed around the 15/17psi mark. It's worth filling a dropper bottle with thinned Fenris Grey, as with all foundation paints they have a habit of separating when thinned and the quantity required means that it's better to just pop a few drops into the aibrush and top it up when you get low and a dropper bottle will allow you to shake the mix up.
