Simple Green in the UK

Hi all.

I know I know, this comes up all the time - I\'m so sorry to raise it again.

I\'m in the UK.

I want to strip resin FW minis.

I\'ve done a bit of research using our friends the search function and google.

I found useful articles like THISand THIS

the resulting consensus is that SIMPLE GREEN is the way to strip our precious FW minis.

The problem is, you can\'t get it on the highstreet in the uk.

You can buy it direct from them via the SIMPLE GREEN WEBSITE

but it seems to cost the earth - £10.99 for a litre and then £5.60 for postage.

I even went to costco after reading an amrican minature stripper who said thats where he got it from - but alas, UK costco doesn\'t stock it.

So my questions are, in order:

1) does anybody know if this is how much it costs in the states, and that I\'m baulking unessecarily at the price.

2) Is there anywhere else to get it if you\'re based in the UK.

3) If not, is there any other product which is unanimously voted as reliable to strip resin. I don\'t want heresay or opinion on this - just facts. FW minis are too expensive to risk on split opinion.

If you\'ve made it this far, congrats - here are two facts for you regarding this topic.

1) if you google stripping, be prepared to be shocked by what you reveal. make sure you give our beloved search engine a context for the term.

2) Divers also use simple green to clean and maintain their diving apparatus, so we\'re not the only hobby to use obscure cleaning products in our obscure hobbies.

Here in Canada I paid 15.99$ (CDN of course!) for what was either 1l or 1.5l. So yes it does sound like their trying to make their quarterly margin\'s of you, and you alone.

That being said it IS that good. That amount of Simple Green has lasted me through stripping two flames of War armies and about 130 Warhammer models, and I have 1/2 the bottle left.

And that was BEFORE I found you can recycle it! If you take what you\'ve used and pour it through a coffee filter the remains are still just as good (But this is hersay. mind you from a multiple Golden Demon Winner). I haven\'t receycled anything yet myself.

So if their is no EASY alternative option I would go for it. vs. the cost of experimenting with FW models I think it\'s still worth what they\'re trying to charge you.

DETTOL.
Used it to clean both Forgeworld resin and GW plastic.
Leave over night , scrub with Toothbrush, warm water and CIF.

Mike two questions-

1) Is DETTOL the chemical or brand name?

2) Will this product damage mini\'s if their left in longer?

I would be happy to use a different product if it works just as well for cheaper, but I tend to fire the figs into the jar and leave them for 2-3 weeks.

I\'ve left figures in Dettol for a couple of days without ill effect, but not longer than that. Pewter figures strip back easier than Plastic and Resin also better than plastic.

Scott; I\'m not sure if Dettol is available in Canada, but it used to be the primary disinfectant in hospitals and the smell is distinctive.
Here are the wikipedia details. You may be able to find a cleaner with the primary ingredient in Canada.

AND that stuff kills acne! Kills toads too!

I noticed pine oil was one of the ingredients. Is that the chemical in pine-sol that eats plastic? I no longer use pine sol, even though it\'s so cheap because of that damn smell mostly, but I found it really destroyed the plastic bases and shields I had on the metal figs I had stripped.

What\'s the UK cost of Dettol vs pine sol and the original posters quoted cost of Simple Green?

Maybe one day I\'ll do a side by side comparison of paint strippers and techniques. I may not be able to paint like you guys yet, but damned if I can\'t knock old crappy paintjobs off models (Only to recrapify many of them again!).

ah - interesting.

Dettoll IS freely available in the UK to.

is it the same active ingredient as the simple green i wonder.

was it any particular dettoll product DR that you used?

I\'ve left plastic and FW stuff in for 3-5 days with no ill effects
I just use regular Dettol, the brown colored one, it\'s cheap as chips, nearly
Asda do a 750ml bottle for £2.48,



Ingredients:
Contains: Chloroxylenol B.P.4.8%w/v, Also contains:, Pine Oil, Isopropyl Alcohol, Castor Oil Soap, Caramel and Water

Put in a Tub, Drop in Mini, Cover with Cling Film (Ceran Wrap).......Limited Smell.

My wife came up with that trick as Chemo really affected her sense of smell. :|~

Coconut oil based room de-odourants really kill the smell. (Plus it\'s the \"cleanest\" smell I know.)

Today I went to the generic dollar store and saw some green spray cleaner, I looked at the back under active ingredients, it is the same stuff as Simple Green - 2 butoxyethanol.

I will post pics on how it works, if so it will be a very cost effective way of stripping mini\'s

The only problem that I have come accross is that detol disolves any greenstuff on the figure which turns to a black/green mush. Yuck!
