Ahh...bad news. The resin completely fracked everything up. Not sure what I did wrong, as I followed the instructions carefully (it was Easycast, which I think Zab has had success with in the past?). Maybe it was too large a pour, but I really don't think it was over the recommended max size of six ounces. What seemed to happen was that the top layer hardened before it was done degassing, so all these bubbles rose to the surface that I couldn't pop without seriously messing up the surface. Worse, when the pressure built up to much in one spot, the bubbles broke through the "crust" and a bunch of resin poured out on top, making a gloopy shape where it ought to be smooth. I'm far enough away from it now that I can just move on, but man. So disappointing. I still want to enter the Mutineers in the PP contest at Gencon, though (I am going, it turns out!), so I'll throw together a new base for them and hopefully still find a way to use my backdrop.
Anyways. Best way to get over this stuff is to keep on working.

Oh that sucks! Yeah i used easy cast on several occasions with no issues. You could add some rocks and use a heavy gloss medium to add frothing waves on top and maybe that will salvage it? It worked on Canny's dwarve base and i did a test wave waaaaay back in my wip thread near the beginning. Also Arbal from Colored Dust has a few wave tutorials that could help save it.

That sucks about the resin. EasyCast is what I use too and have never seen that happen. Maybe you got a bad batch? Zab had a great salvage solution... or you could make up another small batch of resin and add some black ink, pour it to hide the badness, make some black waves and have a Pirates of Dark Water themed base.

Why can't resin have more of a guarantee ! The amount of work it screws up !

Zab, I missed your suggestion--that might work! It just sucks to cover up the rocks underneath, they actually look really cool. The parts that aren't screwy look so good >.< Buuut making waves to cover the awfulness would save the work that went into the box. I'll look into some tutorials, thank you!

So, I think I ran into a similar problem with my Giant Skeleton and Block of Resin project last winter. The two solutions I came up to cover the poorly cured top layer were to use acrylic molding paste from Golden Acrylics or to use this stuff:

I went with the Lexel because the molding paste takes a really long time to cure totally clear. The lexel takes overnight, I think, but doesn't dry as hard as the paste. It dries pretty soft like rubber cement or hot glue. The really cool thing about the Lexel is that it is nearly as clear as the resin but comes out like hot glue, but it stays workable for 20 minutes or so. You shape your waves and then highlight the crests with white and it looks like foam.

Also, you can sand that extra resin down. It sands pretty easy, but you cannot melt it with a heat gun, to try that would be pure folly.

For the record it's all Demi's fault. He even cursed the resin base on the dwarf Canny was doing 
He does present a nice solution as an alternative to mine that would let you choose how much of the work underneath you still wanted to show while covering up the worst with froth since it's completely clear. The heavy gel medium does dry clear but you can't get the same amount of movement out of it - it's better for smaller subtle waves and crests.

I reallyreally like the way your waves turned out on that one, thanks for the info! I would need some serious foaming action to cover up my swathes of bubbles, but maybe that could work out.
The issue with just sanding the surface down is that it would take a hell of a lot of sanding to get those bubbles out, and since I've only got a few weeks, I kinda feel like I should be working on the other various minis I want to finish for competitions.
Here's the damage. It didn't actually flow over the sides, just pooled there a bit.
Thank you! I made it. Dental plaster, air-dry putty, balsa wood and twigs. The glowing symbol needs some work and the scene might need some lighting tweaking, but it's mostly done.

Also also, I've been forgetting to post my progress on Zab's #1 fangirl.
Her waist thingy is the farthest thing from being done. Other than the sword, which is 100% not done. Funny story, I did the work on her chest in bad lighting, screwed it up, and had to carefully peel everything between her scarf and her dress off with an xacto. It went okay.
