Hey everybody. I finally finished the first mini I\'ve ever completed without the use of real metallics. He took a while, but I feel it was well worth the time and patience.

The NMM may not be the best, but I\'m coming along. I\'m still mastering smooth blends, but there\'s always next time.

To me, I think he\'s possibly the best miniature I\'ve painted to date.

The black background is definitely doing a disservice to the mini. It shows the edge highlights well enough, but makes everything else look very dark and in shadows. I am going to go out on a limb (not to far so I don\'t fall off the tree) and say the mini looks good, but the photos doesn\'t do it justice.

Maybe a darker blue background to allow the highlights to show, but not be to bright as a normal blue gradient will allow the mini to show its stuff a bit better.

The handle of the sword might then show if there is anything like shadows on the leatherwork, or if it could use a little bit of shading on it.

Voted a 7 due to current background.

to be picky:

i would up the contrast a little, maybe some edge highlighting on the cape and shield would help it pop. also some darker shadows in the deep crevaces of the robe

also, i am of the belief that if you do writing, it has to be perfect, oh and honour is spelled with a \'u\'!

all in all though, he\'s very smooth and pretty darn good

I saw your WIP for this one & have been a bit unsure about him, I don\'t know if it\'s your ultra-clean style or that I don\'t like the sculpt, can\'t quite put my finger on it.

Shadzar & Freak\'s comments help (having recently tried some shield writing myself, Valor without a U , I know how tricky it is!) but I think in the end it\'s the flesh colour that doesn\'t work for me. Perhaps because it is so close in tone (?) to the cloak/shield. Shade with a little blue or purple, perhaps even grey? I\'m not sure.

Voted 7 anyway but a repost may push it to an 8 , perhaps a different colour background as suggested would do it for me? Oh, & a little attention to the base. Not the most helpful crit ever I know but maybe someone who feels similarly will turn out to be more eloquent lol

Thanks for the feedback guys. I do agree I could have used a better background color, but I\'ve been on the road a lot this past week and that\'s the only one I had. I\'ll have to re-post it.

I\'m already thinking about doing another version of this guy. I do agree there\'s something about the sculpt I don\'t care for, I can\'t put my finger on it as well, but it has a lot of the elements that kill me in mini painting: Smooth metallic surfaces and lots of cloth. Both of those areas have been hell for me in the past so I may have another go at this guy as of yet.

The base is so-so because I\'m waiting on my stuff to get in for my themed game board. I\'m doing a campaign with friends so I need to match their stuff.

Hi Redarmy27, I was lying in a hospital bed last week, coming down from a stonking great anaesthetic when Sir Malcolm came to mind and I think I may have put my finger on what doesn\'t sit right, for me at least.

You have a nice smooth painting style which, with the pink tones, makes the skin/flesh look very young & plump. But the figure is of an older man with his aqualine features & bald head. I wonder if either putting in stubble on his pate/chin to remove the baldness aspect but keep him young, or alternatively age him more?

I\'m not so hot on the painting aspects of this but the latest White Dwarf (#356, Tank Shock! strap line) has part 2 of their face painting workshop which covers both, albeit briefly.

Just a thought anyway & despite my crits I think you\'ve done a lovely job on him, it\'ll be interesting to see your second version. B.

Thanks for that thought. You know, now that I think of it you\'re right. The figure is very warm and almost youthful in appearance. I think I may do a little bit of an overhaul on him here soon once things die down around here to try to revamp him a little bit. I\'ll have to look into that WD article, as I too am not too hot on the aspects, but could look into the principles behind it.
