Deeply saddened at the death of this national treasure.

Personally this man affected the course of my life profoundly introducing me as he did through The Sky At Night to the wonders of astronomy and through it the vast beauty that is the universe.

I remember being allowed to stay up late and watch it once a month, and then badgering my parents to get me a telescope ( many newspaper rounds and washing of cars and mowing lawns later the difference was made up by my parents and I had a great starter telescope) and that was that the course of my life was set. A levels in physics and maths and a degree in astrophysics followed plus an amazing time researching pulsars at Jodrell Bank radio telescope observatory.

I was fortunate enough to meet him a couple times and I found him to be a thorough British eccentric who lived and breathed astronomy. He was also one of the most generous individuals with both his time and money.

Eighty nine is a good innings as he said but too short a time for such an influential man.

God bless were ever you are hopefully out among the stars.

I remember watching him on children's TV when I came home from school, he had so much passion and enthusiasm you couldn't help get drawn in and get fascinated about strange things like red giants and White dwarfs. A great loss.

Ironically for people of a certain age he was "The Games Master" - a tv show and magazine about computer games - so technically space ships and magazines had a lot to do with him ;)
