Sister of Sigmar

A very experimental peice for me, trying to learn about flesh tones and metallics (gold is soon to follow) so any advice u guys can give will be great. iv used a mix of boltgun and mithril for a base coat (didnt have any chainmail at the time) i originally started with tamiya smoke to shade the metal, and while the results were nice they were too shiny. moved on to a purple+dark green ink wash, but iv struggled to get the balance between shading and highlighting, so much so the paint job is lookin a little thick

the base was originally for a diff peice, but i thought it suited the sister more. its suppose to be an imperial palace under attack and still has sand and rubble to be added on the top. will be adding a few strands of clear fishin line for the water coming out of the mouth, and ill be playing with resin and epoxy glue to do deep rippled water. the plastic on the top is textured cobblestone plasticard

anyways, update, am not overly happy with these pics (or the mini tbh) the pics dont quite bring out the highlights like they are IRL and theirs alorts of mistakes on the mini, mainly spots of white undercoat that iv missed.

So... this mini is me stepping out of my comfort zone, everything about it has been done in a diff way, its all new.
theirs quite a long list of things i aint too happy about, but iv have learnt a few new things and the mini has certainly been a interesting stepping stone, althought am not quite sure ill go back and finish it properly, iv finally dug out some old conversions that iv been meaning to finish.

some critique would be great, especially about the metallics, as they were the most important lessons i wanted to learn

That base rocks, really effective! Very nice water effect you\'ve got there. Nice work on the blues, too. As for metallics, I think the silvery colours are looking pretty good, but the gold needs more definition. If I were you I\'d keep on washing and washing with very thin dark paint (\"juices\"), this is how those crazy French and Spanish folks achieve a very smooth, realistic effect.

Yeah, unfortunately the photos are really blocky (Have you enlarged them?)

This is one of few times I\'ve seen this figure and liked it though - nice work - Great base too :)

critique it is :)

ok...so...

metallics:

you want to add more layers of black for shading, remember painting metallics is the exact same as painting nmm, so you need high contrast between your highlights and your shades

the purple: brighter highlights

the face: soften the boldness of the shadows, especially under the eyes, glaze with the skin colour, or mix the brown into the skin and glaze...

i personally love adding nuances, while your colours may not be completely suited for them(very saturated) they can still work

ok so basicly, what you do is glaze in a colour of your choice in the transitions(so between main colour and shades, or between main colour and highlights) they help create atmosphere, so which colour you choose creates a different feel

so for example you have a cold indoor feel from your base, carry this through your model...or brighten your base by adding bronzed flesh to highlight, it will warm it up, and make it feel outdoors, in which case you can change your colours from cold to warmer

blues create the feeling of being indoors, green adds feeling of moisture, rot, growth, disease etc etc(because plants grow in moisture)

reds, yellows, oranges, purples and greens can be warm colours

you can even glaze your metallics

if you need some better examples or a better explanation lemme know(you can skip out on nuances and just practice the stuff you are practicing, sometimes trying too much at once can be bad so)

blending looks pretty good(can always be smoother though) and the base is neat, although the unevenness, and the crushed stone ground kinda take away from it

cheers for the advice starks, iv a few AoW Dwarf that i want to practise skin tones on, winter and autumn nuances are certainly somethin i want to practise, so ill be refering back to ur post in the future :D
