Skarsnik & Gobbla WIP

Hiya,

As this miniature is due to be released on Saturday I thought its about time shared with you my head start on him (mork bless pre releases at gamesday!!)

My bases usually get rushed and neglected so I started with this first, I will then move on to skarsnik and then the meanest squig in the Old world Gobbla, so I always have something cool to look forward to and hopefully keep the motivation there.

I added a few extra details like mushrooms and the skull, although this wasn\'t necessary as these moulded bases are really fun to paint up.

Moving onto Skarsnik:

I am really pleased with the skintones on this piece, although just looking at the pics closer up I feel the teeeth could be neater and more definition- any thoughts?

I am also not 100% convinced that the purple cloth and red hood work well together. I have mixed in red to highlight the purple so the tones are similar but your thoughts are appreciated on this too.

Here is the test piece for my night goblin army. This won a local painting competition judged by GW sculptor Tim Adcock.

Thanks to Chrismisterx for \'inspiration\' and helpful advice with this!

As for Gobbla, I have not got around to painting him yet, but if anyone is thinking of buying this model then be warned- the squigs legs and body will not stick together and go onto the base(sureley this is too much to expect from a £15 model!!!), a bit of planning, and filling with trusty green stuff is required!:flame:

Hopefully more pics soon.

might just be the photos, but you might want to add darker shades of purple so the highlights stand out more, and it will give you an easier time when blending it smooth(so its not just a noticeable highlight on all the big edges) you might be able to achieve the darkness with a scorched brown/purple mix (maybe with a touch of black for added darkness)i find scorched brown tends to lose its browny-ness when mixed and used as a shadow on darker colours(tested on green, red and grey/silver so far) so im pretty sure it will work

as to the scheme i think its fine you just need to break up the colours by adding some flavour as you continue, shouldnt be hard

as to the metallics, they never show up in photos, but it looks like they could do with some nice depth, shadows, maybe dirty it up with brown/black/green inks or shine it up with some turqoise and mithril

the green could probably do with some more dark shades \'ere and \'der to give the skin more contrast and add a bit more realism(if thats what you are going for) and more contrast might help the little snotling stand out a bit unless the photo washed him out

anyways hope that helps :)

At first I didn\'t realize the first picture was just the base...lol...I thought that was the actual mini...

I want a gobbo holding a mushroom now.

For the actual figure, I think you can a little darker on the skin tone. Might just be the picture and lighting, but I don\'t see enough contrast in the greens. The reds and purples are really coming along great. I would say hi-light those 1 or 2 more stages and it\'s done.

The base looks excellent - almost worth posting on its own. I really like the face on Skarsnik (especially the spot) but his hands seem a little rough (could be the photo). As for the red/purple combination, I imagine this character would love that style so it fits in really well, and it looks like you\'ve done a good job with the cloth but again the photo isn\'t showing it clearly enough to be sure.

Can\'t wait to see what you do with the squig and to see it all come together.

I agree, this kinda thing never fails to piss me off, they need a kick up the arse at GW.:cussing:

Will be starting Gobbla as soon as I finish Skarsnik.

Unfortunatley I won\'t be able to paint any more this weekend as I will be at a conference for my sons\' syndrome, but can\'t wait to start this again!

I am really pleased with the skin personally, so won\'t be adding more contrast. Besides I want my goblins to be lighter than my orcs. I started with catachan green (which admittidley isn\'t the darkest of greens), mixed with increasing ammounts of camo green, then gradually added golden yellow to highlight and then bleached bone added to this. Glazed with watered down green ink. Will be shading the robes however, something just didn\'t feel right so thanks for pointing this out.

The chainmail has been glazed with black, brown and green inks for a grubbier effect, but as this is not evident will have to make it more prominent.

Thanks again for feedback, will keepyou updated as andwhen so keepthe advice coming!
