i hav fallen in \"love\" with the FW Death Korps minis and since there is alot of skull iconigraphy i have com here asking for expert guidance on skull painting, mine are either way too bright(bleached bone tone) or too brown, i cant get the realistic looking tone.

please treaat me like a n00b and go into some detail, so i can have an army i can be truley proud off :D

cheers,
Dan

ive always been a fan of the dirty looking skulls so i tend to basecoat them Chaos Black, then Khemri Brown, drybrush Bleached Bone and then pick out tiny hightlights with Skull white.

It works for me but then everyone does a skull diferent. When i was about 15 i painted a whole 1000pt Undead army simply by washing a dark brown wash over skull white....the good ole days haha

right this is where i sound like a right n00b, but i\'d rather that and get it right then keep f***ing it up.

to drybrush, u use slightly watered paints but have barley any on the brush right?

everyone starts somewhere, ive been painting for a while now and im still a noob.

No, no need to water down the paint, try and get a flat brush OR a brush that your not gonna use much as drybrushing seriously damages the tips.

Just dip the brush into the paint and then rub the tip of brush into some tissue until there is barely anything on the tip (depending if you want to do 1 heavy drybrush or a few lighter drybrushes)

Then just stroke it over the desired area, do it a few times if its not to your standard to do a heavier drybrush (still barely none on your tip mind)

Tip with drybrushing:

Give the paint slightly more time to \"dry\" as for some reason it seems to take longer to adhere securely than \"wet\" paint, and if you try to go over it to soon, you can take it all off...

Now the question is: When are you going to show us your painted miniatures?

i will be ordering them as soon as i get paid, so it will be in a couple of weeks unfortunatly, but i am going to paint some \"moch\" attempts using just random mini\'s i have lying around so once i got one finished i\'ll post it up :D
then every1 can laugh at me :p and more importantly give me plenty of pointers :D

Cheers,
Dan

Ps: after starting to think about a general paint scheme whilst playing Medal of Honour, i though how simular the death korps are to the nazis...so i my greater wisdom thought that i would paint my men the same colours, but not the icons; dont think it would go down to well in GW to get out a nice painted army cozered in swashikers lol

so now i com to you again for yet more pointers, this time how would i pll off teh greyey/green they wear and any other sugestions for colours of other items, armour, guns ect im ope to sugestions :D

Theres a pic for referance, and if any one find nazis offensive for some reason i am sorry, i just like they\'re uniforms

DKoK draw their influence far more from WWI Germans rather than WWII. The colours are pretty much the same though. I\'d say maybe Charadon Granite basecoat (handy as it\'s a foundation paint) up to codex grey with possibly some codex/fortress grey highlights. This will end up being a slightly darker looking grey than German uniforms but it will fit the darker nature of the Krieg better.

Also there less moral objectionablity in WWI, no holocaust etc. So you can feel less guilty about your army lol

\'Cause there\'s nothing objectionable about the use of mustard gas and flamethrowers on human targets. After all, everyone loves a flamethrower ;)

Although I\'m not familiar with the range, I\'m sure I\'ve heard mention of a green-grey German fatigues colour in the VMC range.

As for moral objections, all wars suck :p
And as far as I know, they didn\'t have flamethrowers in WWI, but mustard gas, CS and various chemical weapons were in development.

As for gentle highlighting, you have a few options:

1. Gradiate your highlighting mix less
(Ie. Instead of say a regal blue base coat, and then going straight to Ultramarine blue highlights, have a 50:50 layer between them)

2. Simply water down your highlights more (Wick off excess to prevent running)

3. Wet-Blending

To get smoother highlights use more colours in between..also with drybrushing it is a good idea to do a glaze of colour afterwards to smoothen the whole thing out....

Dry Brushing tips....
use a flat brush with stiff bristles...GW Drybrushes are actually good for this.
load the brush with paint as normal then paint on a piece of cardboard so most of the colour is taken off.
do the strokes gently and in one direction..Best with skulls to go down the face.

colours vary I use black with scorched brown base....
first highlight add graveyard earthe next add bubonic brown to the mix then add bleached bone...
pick out the shapes of the skull with a detail brush painting rather than drybrushing.Use pure bleached bone for this..so all the bumps and ridges
glaze with a mix 1 part bronzed flesh a touch of black and about 5 parts clean water.wash over the whole skull but avoid it pooling too much...

sounds complicated but when you get going it ain\'t really..plus iyt\'s such an important feature of the kieg guys your right making sure you can do it well.
good luck and post pics as soon as you get chance....
