paint it just like with rocks mate.
various colours for various looks.
quickest method for good looks is medium gray, dry brush with light grey.
wash with green in places, then wash with brown in places.
dry brush lightly with kahki
enhance shadows with black washes.
dirty up with pigment powders.

The house I was in at the time was next door to one which had been blown up a bit as a result of a serious gas leak so there was no one living in it at the time.
After I\'d got all the slates which were lying around in the garden I might have.... encouraged a few more to fall off using a broom handle out of the attic window:twisted:

whenever there is heavy wind round here I get out and have a scrounge for House tiles ....kinda puts me off being out in the wind .. slate breaks into great little pieces when it hits the road but the results may vary a little if it hit my head....
@cadian all the slate and stone on my bases is done roughly to the following.. codex grey base fortress drybrush bleached bone drybrush extreme edges.. wash with watered down black with a little snakebite.. Then the odd bit of green ,blue or brown wash to add detail in cracks here and there....

Slate is also my weapon of choice for basing, check out my gallery, I reckon most of my stuff is slated up!
I would always ALWAYS reccomend painting anything natural that you use for basing, be it twigs/wood slate etc. The paint helps disguise its scale and also ties it in with the model better.
Demonheralds recipies work great, and I have also found that purple is also a great wash for slate too.

Dave said it best.. you need to paint the itmes use for basin as much as you can to try to bring everything into scale.
Thats why most artificial ground work materials especially the ground foam from woodland scenis looks out of place or scale on 28mm painted miniatures.

Builders dropped a full box of slate tiles 30 feet onto concrete.
Guess who benefited from that then. (Smug)
But painting any type of stone puts the reflective index of the material back into the same levels as the Painted figure which is why unpainted stone looks \"Wrong\" when used on a mini\'s base.
