SM Standard Bearer for a Duel WIP

For those about to rock...

We salute you!

Just got done tonight with the last of the GS-ing I wanted to do, washed and sprayed him, and I thought he looked very imposing as a plain ol\' primed figure - figgered I\'d post him here and ask for comments/suggestions as I go along. His friend, the Kroot about to bury a bladed rifle shaft into his back, is still not fully GS-ed, but that should be coming along soon.

He goes along with the Duel base I posted in another thread, and I\'m planning on painting him up to go along with my (limited) collection of 2nd Company Ultramarines.

Put the base in here ?

Looks nice, but I do think the gash in the shoulderpad is way too deep, it shouldn\'t have cut tru the ceramics... Just my opinion of course :D

Is that the old metal standard bearer?

I have to agree about the gash... I don\'t know about what would penetrate what, but it looks incongruous to the rest of the model.

Actually, I like the gash. I agree that it\'s really, really deep for ceramite armour -- but an eviscerator blade, killer kan, or any other uber-chain or spinning blade could have done it. I hear hobby knives are really deadly too. Maybe it was a hobby knife. ;)

I think someone cut him with a really sharp wit.

Seriously though, maybe with a gash that deep you\'d need to show some damage to the chest beneath. Minor damage, but what would rip through the shoulder pad and not scratch what\'s beneath?

I kinda saw the SM\'s shoulder pad as being pretty resistant to stuff like ammo rounds and the like, given the shape and the supposed material. On the other hand, I see the trim on the shoulder pad as being not as durable as the actual armor itself, so it\'s chewed into pretty good - it\'s dug into with a knife, putting it at about the same depth as the shoulder pad armor damage.

All things considered, I see this as causing a deeper gouge in a SM\'s armor than indirect fire:

Not the guy that\'s in the duel diorama, mind, but one of his friends in an appropriate pose.

So far as the SM model itself, I bought it in a blister pack labeled as a Blood Angel Standard Bearer. The one arm is plastic and was appropriately posed - I then cut and repositioned the power fist arm, swapped out the banner pole with a custom one, mangled his leg, and chewed up the plastic shoulder pad a bit. The front view doesn\'t really show it, but the SM\'s right leg is in a really bad way right now.

Just to put it into perspective, judging from the depth of the gash, and the size of the entry, his chest would have been cut open as well... Most likely, a cut this size is at the middle of whatever caused it, sword/blade of some kind or worse, and wouldn\'t have left much space for the front of the blade to hit, without him being chopped appart :D

Ceramic armours of the Space Marines are insanely durable, and can withstand ALOT of punishment... some crude Kroot weapon would not do damage like that :)

The pain of doing something like gashes and battle damage, is that it has to look realistic, even though it\'s a fantasy world... I know... strange...

Imho, replace the shoulderpad, and lessen the gash. Battle damage is neat! But think about the SM\'s armor ;) Read about it :) <cough> 3+ <cough>

*cough*codex pg. 21. look at that space marine\'s shoulder pad, that proves me right and wrong that that could be done and not done*cough* lol

I guess sort of nail on the head with the it\'s fantasy thing.
Main problem for me with the gash though is it is in a position that will draw from the focal point of the model the face. (even though it is carrying a banner)
I would suggest maybe filling it to shallow the gap or maybe hiding a bit with a conveniently placed purity seal.

It\'s hard to say without seeing the model with it\'s counterpart but the pose looks a little mmmmm...staticish (is that a word) I\'m also a little puzzled. the duel categoy is in effect two models in a dramatic pose on a diorama setting. The overall look decided by the interaction between the minis.I\'m just wondering why you\'ve gone for using the gaming bases?? Are these going to be completely filed over when finished ?? it\'s just doing like this can limit the amount of direct interaction you can get especially with some sort of slash thing going on.

Folks were asking to see the base and the opponent, so for sake of perspective on the scene, I took a few more pics of the WIP tonight. Still need to flesh out some GS details on the Kroot to show off his \"movement\" a little more, but that\'s essentially the pose I\'m limited to due to the pinning in midair through the one foot. I\'m aiming for a \"dropping from the highpoint of his jump off the upright pillar remains\" look, about to bury the blades from the rifle barrel into the already-wounded SM.

Somebody had asked regarding the bases - yes, I\'m intentionally using \'em, as I\'m wanting to use the Kroot figure in with the rest of my \"action-posed\" Kroot unit and the SM as a standalone piece if needed, so I based the scene around the use of standard bases fitting in seamlessly as possible.

Agreed - lookin\' good :)

There\'s been a lot of argument about the toughness of SM armour in this thread, but I\'d just like to offer the memory of a time when my squad of terminators had just eviscerated a group of Ork boyz, when the sergeant was killed by a gretchin with an autogun!!

(We figured it went through an eyepiece or a joint)

Anyway - if you feel like lessening the gouge in the shoulder pad, just wadge (A technical term) some GS in there.

Been a little while since I added to the thread. Here\'s the most recent pics of the SM (and his pal the attacking Kroot Carnivore) as were posted in my entry for the Duel Competition I\'ve been painting \'em up for:

Comments and suggestions appreciated, as the SM (and Kroot) are still very much a WIP.

2 suggestions.

On the marine I think you need to give the armour more highlights.

As for the kroot I think he needs more shadow, I would\'ve started off with a darker base coat for the skin.

Otherwise looking good I like the idea, and the feel of movement seems to work good

Thats coming along very nicely, I especially like the kroot chap. Good imagination there, can\'t wait to see it finished:D

liking the scene,

the jumping kroot makes it for me - the marine looks a little too static.

its very cool though, nice work.

I agree with Rev.

The marine does look a bit static, but not enough to spoil the atmosphere.

It might have been better with the marine just about to thud the banner pole into the ground with his both hands (thinking he\'s won) and the kroot proving different.
