Small Tips That make a big difference

Hi,

I am just about to start painting my first figures (dark elf black ark corsairs). I intend to focus my attention on painting and modeling instead of gaming so I intend to paint a wide range of figures.

I am looking for tips or things I shouldn't do as a painter - can anyone help me improve as quickly as possible?

Don't start drybrushing. Except for stones and chainmail its a bad habbit in my opinion, a habbit that is hard to get rid of again.
Use thin layers of colors. Better paint them twice and make them thin with a fluid color than to make 1 thick layer which makes plain parts uneven and humpy.

This forum is basically chock full of tips, so you're in the right place anyway! The Sticky Thread is the obvious first place to look, gotta be hundreds of tips in the threads collected there; and try a search for the word tips in thread titles too as there are a lot of threads you'll find useful.

Also, post your work in Discuss Submissions and Work In Progress & Project Logs specifically asking for critique; you'll tend to get critical input here on CMON anyway but asking straight out for it people will be more inclined to write a bit more.

Thanks Blue Cobold, I have put dry brushing on the back burner for now - I find the rsults a bit hit and miss to be honest. I will try other techniques.

I managed to wash my brush out in coffee for the firt time today!
