snow bases

I started to mix my own snow today based on the snow article.. Unfortunately the baking soda reacts with both water and pva glue. It bubbles and dries very fast to small soft pebble-like no-good-to-use-as snow bits. If i mix more pva glue or water in it.. it just starts to bubble again.

What am I doing wrong?

Help appreciated! :)

my only suggestion is that the baking soda is reacting with the water and could be acidic? try using bottled water. other than that, i have no idea as i have tried this and it worked fine (sorry to rub it in!)

Everything you\'re doing seems to be OK, but maybe you\'re adding too much water or mix it in the wrong order. At first, add some (I said SOME) water to pva glue, mix it, and then delicate start adding soda still mixing it. The result should be a liquid, NOT the plaster lol. Apply this stuff w/brush onto your base/diorama, and finally sprinkle it with some more soda. Leave it till it\'s dry, then remove useless soda and that\'s it. You\'ve got your snow now. The result should be satisfying.
You can see the results here at my diorama (the bottom of the page):

Im sorry I should have been clearer on my article on exactly how to mix it.

put the pva in a container then start adding the soda into the mix and it will start to go thick, then you add a tiny amount of water once it is mixed just to make it more useable, if you add water to it as you are mixing it it reacts with the soda.

Sorry

here is my result using NWMP articles and this order....

bc.jpg

tiny drop of ice blue on side of container.
PVA glue in container.
stir in the blue
stir in small amounts of BS until like peanut butter
add little water and stir
looked like light blue toothpasre but a bit thinner.
applied to bases
liberally sprinkled BS on bases.
dried for 48 hours
tapped bottom of base to release excess BS
gently brushed off excess BS on legs, arms etc.
covered with gloss spray to seal it.

so did i do it right? does this help you Avelorn?

it worked out fine! :) I just had to be gentle.. I will show the result soon.

Shadzar. I think your snow looks good! IMO you might paint black round the base also to set the snow apart from the plastic. Very interesting that you mixed blue into it, I might try that myself. I did not seal it however as you did.. I\'m afraid it might ruin the rest of the base as I have only a few small patches of snow.
