So I bought an airbrush - Phase 3 \'I tried it on a mini\'

Well, phase 3 this week, having researched, bought and played with my new airbrush I tried it on a model, the new Valkerie model to be precise.

Only the interiors so far, exteriors next week.

Its easier than it looks, once the paint consistency is right:

That looks great. I am looking forward to seeing the model finished, should definitely come out nicely. Great color choice.

Looking great Rev. You\'re right about getting paint consistency right, it takes some getting used to but you pick it up fairly quickly.

Could you remind me what you got for a brush/compressor? I think there was a thread before but I don\'t remember specifics, I read pretty much every airbrush thread since I picked mine up a while back :)

The scheme on the troopers is looking top notch btw. Love the shiny leather!

Aye that looks good, airbrushes are scary things at first especially when your used to the control of a series 7 sable brush. Keep the pics coming!

Figures look good in situ Rev, looking forward to seeing how the exterior turns out.

Search for compressor with Rev as the user name:

Nice work, and it\'s a lot of fun too! I use my airbrush on just about every mini for a base coat at least. Love it! Thanks to Airhead again for the reccomendation on the Iwata!

I\'ve been painting tanks like a fiend since I got my airbrush :)

I am going to try it out on some 54mm models and a squad of marines sometime soon.

few more updates for anyone who wants to know what you can realistically achieve on your first outing with an airbrush;

A few of the UK modelling mags have reviews/promos of two or three of the Harder & Steenbeck aribrushes at the moment. Worth checking out.

I would really like to check out an air brush :D But how do you highlight and shade the model? I understand that its good for painting camo pattern and stuff, but did you use only on the valkyrie or on the guardsmen as well?

Since I only paint 30 mm figures, vehicles :p I guess you would not do a whole lot with a airbrush on a 30 mm figure :p? Maybe basecoat but nothing more? Anyways, its the vehicles I want to know about :)

At the most basic you can use an airbrush to establish zenithal lighting by, for example, priming grey and then spraying white from above (plus maybe black from below). You can also prime black, spray heavily in grey and then spray more lightly in white, pointing directly downwards.

But if you\'re willing to put in the effort on masking you could do a lot of the painting by airbrush, even on minis.

Many vehicle modellers don\'t highlight or shade their models. Others do but not as we would understand it.

There are many techniques that do some basic shadowing, from preshading (spraying dark paint into panel lines before going over with the base colour), plus colour modulation and a rudimentary kind of zenithal lighting to name a couple more. But a lot of \'shading\' is not done with the airbrush, but with washes.

There are dozens of painting methods for vehicles that use airbrushing to one degree or another - that\'s why there are entire forums dedicated to nothing but armour, aircraft, spacecraft etc.

Wow.. I did not know there was so much you could do with an airbrush! Maybe I need to pick on up :D

Is the FW masterclass book anygood when it comes to learning techniques and such? Because if Im going to buy an airbrush I will probably use in on GW space marine and imperial guard vehicles and FW vehicles..

Yes and No.
It\'s probably the Best book GW have published on painting miniatures , but it doesn\'t go into depth on Airbrushing as well as some DVD\'s.
I\'ve learned more by being shown the best ways to attempt to work and playing from there. If you can get in contact with someone nearby to you who is adept with an airbrush then try to get them to show you the basics. Then it\'s down to you to play around.

I really liked the FW masterclass book. Without it I wouldn\'t have been so inspired to pick up an AB an give it a go.
