Getting into WH40K. Thought I\'d pick up a couple units of Space Marines and go to town....

Until I saw the price tags.
A 5 man PLASTIC unit costs more than 9 pewter minis???

Scrapped that idea. I\'ll have to settle for stealing one marine at a time from the local gamers during their games, or something. Sheesh.

I\'ll stick with metal toy soldiers.

Cost of books, cost of plastic minis... nah. It\'d add up to twice my life\'s earnings to have an actual army.

The five man quad is a bad deal, only buy the 10 man marine squads. As for prices of plastic miniatures vrs metal you can\'t really compair them In my opinion I get more value for my money from the plastics than the metals. More ability to convert ect.

Oh and please don\'t turn this is to a I hate GW thread we have to many of them already..

I have no intention of this becoming an \'I hate GW\' thread. They have some pewter mini\'s that I\'ll still get for myself. I just won\'t be investing in the game until I win the lottery, is all.

serious though guys.. have you looked at the prices from other companies.. look in the CMON shop most minis there cost $6.00 each or more..many closer to $10.00 each. This is for single 28mm figures. GW is not the only culprit, just the one with the biggest target on it head. Most Rackham miniatures out price GW figures any day.

Its all about preceived value..what do you get for your money and did you enjoy the entertainment value you got out of it.

$6 for a single, metal figure against $10 for a plastic figure is a big difference.

I don\'t hate Games Workshop at all. I like Games Workshop as the company that brought me into the hobby and also host the Golden Demon. Also, if Games Workshop started charging $25 a figure I still wouldn\'t get mad at them (in fact I would laugh because I don\'t play Warhammer); it\'s their company and they can charge whatever they want. Nobody has to buy them and there are plenty of other games you can play like Warmachine and Confrontation.

GW miniatures aren\'t too bad when it comes to prices.

To change the topic slightly. Last time I was in Australia a cup of coffee had increased 50c in price in just one year. Fuel prices were rediculously high. Too high. And thank God I don\'t smoke cigarettes. A pack costs over AU$10. Suckers.

Let\'s face it. Some people may buy one GW miniature squad and get a life time worth of painting out of it. Now that\'s value!

You get what you pay for. (At least most of the time).

A single Reaper metal figure here is in the $8-12 range. A box of 10 plastic marines, with a bunch of bits is $50, thus the platics are half the price of the metal.

I think when you start to compare to other forms of entertainment minis are cheap. Movie ticket 3hrs fun $15, computer game~$50 a couple weeks fun, box space marines $50 for a few weeks fun (construction, painting gaming).

The trouble with minis of course is that 1 is never enough...

\"But Ripley, she\'s just a piece of plastic\". Plastic minis just don\'t FEEL like they\'re worth $10 each... Also, production: the molds may be pricier but you can speedily crank out plastic minis forever with one steel mold. So it feels like you are getting charged $10 for something of very little value.

... I bought the original \"Space Marines Boxed Set\" back in the early 90\'s, I still have a bunch unpainted! They were $2 CDN each ($60 for a 30-marine box).

Where do you buy them? I\'ve seen them at Dueling Grounds on Dundas West, what a great little store! GW coexists there with an abundance of Rackham and quite a lot of Flames of War stuff.

GW has put out shite for a long time. Buy Wr machine, Dark Age, or Confrontation.
Chropia and Warzone have some good miniatures too. I haven\'t played WarZone in years though.

When it all comes down to it, 10 minis for $50 is really not all that bad. It is only $5 each. The problem that I have is that the sculpts are as EB says shite.

Well Shite is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I love the new plastic terminators. As to being able to crank out the plastic minis to pay for the molds - I don\'t think so. A basic mold for plastic injection is 10 - 20,000 US the GW ones would be much higher. When you factor in production costs; wages; shipping; advertising and R&D I would think $50.00 bucks is a bargain.

However as with any transaction value is simply perception. If you like the product enough to pay the asking price then you are getting value for money.
