Well waddya know....I\'ve learned something here today Thanks for all the info guys. I really didn\'t know what \'acrylic\' was and now that I know, I\'m all the happier for it.

Tamiya Transparents

There is a wide range of transparent paints available in both acrylic and enamel. Its amazing what you\'ll find in a \"hobby shop\" and I\'m not referring to a GW hobby shop, but rather a \"planes trains and automobile\" type shop.

Tamiya makes an \"acrylic\" and an \"enamel\" version (thinned with turpentine/varsol/generic paint thinner).

The Tamiya Acrylic stuff is water soluble. That\'s the \"acrylic\" part but it also contains isopropanol and glycol ethers. The \"New-to-me\" US-labelled ones carry a \"large\" flammable symbol on the front. My older bottles have just 3 lines in English and the rest of the label in Japanese. Like Floquil products, they have a particular aroma and evaporate quickly. I put the lid back on the bottle right after transferring some of the paint to my palette.

The US-lablled thinner 20A contains an \"alcohol mixture\" and states \"This thinner is to be utilized only with Tamiya Acrylic Paints\". Here\'s a link to their online colour chips. http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/list/acrylic_1.htm

I normally use Tamiya Acrlyic thinner just for their paints.

Golden also makes a limited range of transparent acrylic artist colours.

Are the fumes on the Tamiya clears dangerous? I haven\'t much used the ones I\'ve got, partly because every time I give them a try I start feeling a little lightheaded and nauseous. It looks like some cool stuff could be done with them, but I\'m not sure the quesy feeling is worth it...

Unfortunate to hear of your personal reaction... I get a similiar reaction with GW spray cans .

I\'m no chemist, but I\'d bet if I pour some in a bag and \"huff\", it would be. Anything can be dangerous in the wrong hands - some people consider sunlight, sugar, peanut butter or simply walking down the street to be dangerous.

Do not continue using anything if it makes you feel light headed, nauseous or queasy. Come to think of it, a two-four of beer would eventually have the same effect.

ps, I\'d rather be paintin\' than typin\'.

I got fed up paying through the nose for Tamiys thinners and ended up making my own.

A 50/50 mix of IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) and water with a dash of flow enhancer seems to work well, it makes a good airbrush thinner for other acrylics too.

In the UK pharmacists can usually get you 1 litre bottles of the stuff for a reasonable price or Maplin stock it (www.maplin.co.uk).
