I see so many mini's that were painted for this contest or that contest. is there somewhere to go to get a list of what is the list of competitions ? I'd be very interested in seeing some of these live.
Preferably on the east coast, but I can travel.

That'd be nice, but I'm not aware of a list like that. However I can tell you about a number of shows on the east coast where you can see a lot of great mini work in person. The biggest is probably the MFCA show (Philadelphia in May), it draws people from Europe as well as around the US and the work is outstanding. Definitely worth the trip. I think the next biggest is the Atlanta show (in February). A bit smaller with more of a regional crowd are the Long Island Show (in November) and the NCMSS show (DC in September). All of these will have a mix of historical and fantasy/sci-fi figures. They also all use the open judging system. Basically everyone who enters is judged against a set standard for gold, silver, bronze, or a certificate of merit. No one gets an award at the expense of someone else, if 10 people deserve gold medals then they hand out 10 gold medals.

There's also the NOVA Open coming up in August in the DC area. The painting competition is relatively new so they don't have a huge number of entries, but they've got lots of gaming tournaments and they offer some nice painting tutorials/seminars. This one is on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd podium judging system.

Also in August is Jersey Fest. This is less of the gaming miniatures and more of the larger scale garage kits, movie characters, and stuff like that. Still neat and worth checking out if you're nearby.
