So what happened to CMON6?

I\'ve notived that the CMON 6 Contest rules are no longer in the Contest Section of the web site? Has the any mini in monochrome contest been officially pulled?

I\'m asking because I\'m already in the process of painting my grayscale monk. I was going to use the one accent color for some grass on the base, but if the contest if pulled I might just as well throw in some flesh tones on the skin.

I hope it hasn\'t be pulled, I was really looking forward to this one. I haven\'t started work on it, but I have chosen a mini to do for it.

I\'m sure borg or chern will come along and give us an update as to whether it is still going ahead

Has it been dropped or not?

I\'m giving this a friendly bump because I really would like to know if the contest had been dropped or not.

It would be a shame if it was dropped. I\'ve done about a third of mine, and I\'ve seen some other minis for the contest that are really breathtaking.

I think I\'ll go ahead and do it anyway, contest or not. It wasn\'t like I was going to win or anything, plus I\'ve never done a monochrome model before, so I think it might be fun

Umm I think Chern Ann dropped it or at least post poned it untill he could figure out a better way to verify it.. he was having images sent into him that were obvious Black and whites of a painted mini or switched to gray tone in PS. He wanted to figure out a way so that he could tell an entry was really painted in monochrome or just someone trying to fool everyone.

Id suggest you PM Chern Ann to find out the actual reason.

it\'s not terribly hard to tell if a photo has been turned BW in photoshop with the tools the program offers to analyze photos.

For the most part it won\'t really matter, I would say let people post whatever, however test those in the top 5 (or however many places offer some sort of reward)

Oh. Too bad. I\'m in a gray mood anyway.

That\'s a shame. Really, it\'s a shame.

Besides, I thought the rules allowed for an \"accent color.\" If it required it, (because if the rules allow it who wouldn\'t put it in?) then you could tell that the photo was not BW photoshopped. More importantly, I don\'t think you can BW a color mini and have it look like it is a good BW painted mini.

But if that is the decition of Chern Ann so be it.

I actually agree with Tzor, I actually think it would be HARDER to paint a mini using color then turning it BW. It would look less convincing, and you would have less control of your greys as colors often act funny when you turn a photo B/W...

oh well

Hate to disagree with you eric but heres a good example: http://public.fotki.com/LBehm/pctures_from_iraq/other_albums/march_05/07700013.html

Take a look at that picture, then the one that follows it - they were both taken using 100 speed color film, processed normally, then the first one was stripped of color using PS - tweeked and posted. Looks pretty black and white to me.

And I know how it was done, cause I did it.

*** Waves hand :p ***

Simply because I don\'t think it\'ll fit the theme of my mini. Too flashy.

Since I\'m more than half done a honkin\' big mini for this, I\'m going to finish it, even if the contest gets / is cancelled.
It\'s looking pretty good, if I say so myself.

And if it isn\'t cancelled... I\'m gonna WIN!

You\'re right of course, that with the proper ability in photoshop it isn\'t hard to take a color photo and make it look good in BW. What I meant to say however is that it is hard to take a color photo and turn it BW to look good in photoshop, but still make it look like it\'s a color photo of a BW painted miniature.

When you take a photo of a BW miniature, it\'s not simply black and white, if use the analytic tools in photoshop you\'ll see it\'ll be a wide combination of all the colors, even if in small ammounts. If someone desaturates a photo, it will not have this, and more over our eye will pick it up. I think our eyes are extrodinarily sensitive to issues like this, we can recognize neutral grey and it stands out to use because it\'s basically not naturally occuring.

Also when I say it\'s harder to paint in color to get an effective BW result is because when working in color, people tend to think about blending colors and color contrast/composition and tend to forget about tonal blending/contrats/composition, which is the essence of working in B/W. When you paint in B/W you are forced to think in these terms because you can not fall back on color to get the effects you want. So painting in color, then turning it B/W can often result in poor use of tone, contrast & composition.

I thought we\'d agreed that fraud was not really a big concern for this contest?

... not that it looks like I\'ll get around to completing an entry :(

You\'ve still got a month and a bit, NSA! Go for it!
If I can do a Verocithrax for it, then surely you can do something. :)
