Some minis from a noob

Good work overall, but IMO the highlights on the Black orc are a little harsh. Welcome to the website by the way, enjoy yourself and watch out for most of the senior members - they have a habit of hijacking threads - lol

Hi there Bakalla, welcome to CMON.

Nice load of pics there - you\'ve got more than I have and I\'ve been here for ages! I had a look at them all and had the following comments, which I hope are helpful.

Nice ork! It looks like you\'ve used inks to shade, which has made the figure a little shiny. You can use a matt varnish to stop that. I like the shading and highlights on the ork, but I also notice a mold line on the right leg. Unfortunately inks/washes make everything standout

Ooh a butt ugly minotaur!! But you\'ve done a good job to paint it up well. You\'ve done great shading on the skin and gloves. There\'s a technique called blending/layering which I am trying very hard to perfect myself and that would allow the transition from dark to light look smoother.

Ah a dwarf Nice shading with inks again on the skin and his hair looks good too. The axe heads could use a little highlighting, but the gem looks nice.

The black ork looks mean. You\'ve got the right idea of the layering technique for the shading/highlighting, but as I said above, it needs to be a bit more subtle. Easier said than done as I said!

All in all a nice bunch to start off with. I hope you enjoy yourself here and look forward to lots more posts

But your work shows promise, maybe a bit shiny, but that could be a flash or light. I really like \"the White dwarf\", great beard on that one.

I wish I had been able to paint like that after a month...

Nice work bakalla. I would suggest that the first thing that would improve your scores is to get your hands on an imaging programme that allows you to adjust levels and colour bias.

Your painting looks sound, too bloody sound for a month of working at it!

some cool and varied minis there and a great camera. two things, go easy on the varnish or spray sealer, try and get a matte spray or a \"flat spray\" so your minis look less shiny like the orc feels like he is almost dripping. also once you take a big picture, shrink it down in any graphics program by about a 1/3 or half of your current pics. they really are so big that even pro\'s at that size would have trouble looking good. and welcome!

I\'ve only been painting for about a month too, and I think your stuff looks great! What camera did you get, looks like it works a lot better than mine. (Thinking of getting a new one anyway...)

That is some pretty good stuff you have posted.

Although most folks do like the matte finish (myself included) sometimes I think it works for some minis. Both your orcs and minotaur look good shiny.

I think it gives them a greasy, icky feeling, which being who they are works out mighty fine.

Excellent job considering that you have only been at it for a month.

I can\'t wait to see next months output!!

Two suggestions that will immediately add a point or so to all your minis.

1.) Get some static grass or flock and base your minis.

2.) Buy some matte varnish to reduce the shiny look of your minis. Though they do have a jolly, candy-like appearance as they are....

As for the camera, i used a Nikon Coolpix 2000.. which works great IMHO. I realize the pictures i posted are a bit too big, i\'ll make them smaller next time

I don\'t think the pics are too big. I thought the were great. As long as it fits in the screen you\'re cool. The stacked pics won\'t both fit in the screen, but who cares? I can\'t look at two things anyway, not with my one eye.

By the way, I may have accidentally posted a comment for your orc boar boy on the picture of your Reaper orc. If I did please forgive me. I have a tendency to have 5 or 6 different pics up at once, which is more than my little brain can cope with. It\'s tough being a cyclops.

I dig the dwarf. Good highlights. But see if you can tone down the deliniation between your colors. You want to try to fade from one color to another. You may need to thin the paints out and put on a bunch more coats, but it will be worth it. At least, that\'s what I\'m told. So far my efforts in this area have been mediocre.
