SOme questions on SE-NMM

Hi there, since I have GW\'s Sauron miniature, I wanted to make it a big modelling project. I am doing him in SE-NMM.

Now my questions are:

1. If your lightsource is blocked because of other pieces of armour in front of the piece you\'re painting, do you have to paint a lightsource, or don\'t you?

2. Should the colour be darker if your lightsource is blocked?

3. Do you have to blackline the deep recesses between pieces of armour when doing SE-NMM?

4. Do you have to put a gloss varnish on SE-NMM pieces, and which one to use?

5. As I am doing this on a Sauron miniature, would it be right to make lava streams in the earth effect of the SE-NMM?

And please, don\'t tell me I am crazy, because I am beyond reasoning now

Damn, there goes my intelligent and thought-out reply lol.

The only one I can help you with is n°4 : the answer is no, no gloss, it breaks the effect.

Simply put, if your lightsource is blocked, don\'t paint it. But remember in real life, light bounces around so you might not need to paint a darker side on the chrome. I\'ve been thinking about trying something where some plates are lighte, some are darker.. but right now It\' very hard and techincal to understand/teach. For sure I\'ll try and put it in an article!

Well, I think that evil guys are not always dirty buggers that never wash themselves. Bad guys can also polish their armour, remember that!

But, I am still thinking about doing the lava. It is not that nice I think, and will make it look less like metal.

The SE-NMM effect will be not so very bright, as I will take grey colours for my sky and black tints for my earth effect. (As my diorama is based in Mordor, so no blue sky and brown earth, but grey sky and black earth.

I will prime the model white and then give it a black wash, so that I get a nice black colour in the recesses.

I am still doubting if I should use gloss on the Sky-Earth effect.

So, suggestion are VERY welcome!

Could anyone confirm what I said two posts above, because apparently my suggestion wasn\'t good enough.

You got it! No gloss on SENMM. It definitely ruins the effect.

If you\'re going to put a satin or gloss finish on it, then you will wind up with weird looking lights reflecting off of your \"dark\" areas and other such nonsense. I think that when doing SENMM, you pretty much have to dull coat the whole model, because otherwise you\'re going to get conflicting light sources--those you painted will not always be the same as those that are resulting from the actual light you\'re in at any given moment.

My apologies, but I didn\'t see your reply! I thought the lines under the other remark where a part of your signature. I am sorry!

About the gloss, it makes sense indeed. If you paint the lightsource than light reflecting from the surface looks weird. Thanks!

np, I should be the one apologizing, I was in a bad mood.
Note to self : when in a bad mood, hold off replies until calm has returned. :innocent:

Me too,my reply sounded quite rude.
The dull toned sky earth should be OK.Are you doing every piece of armour then????
