Song of Ice and Fire TV Series...

Just found out about this and thought there may be some interested parties here.

HBO have acquired the rights to George R.R. Martin\'s \"A Song of Ice and Fire\" books and will be making them into a TV series :)

Little bit more here

This could be really good, but I guess it will depend how much they water it down.

Mr C typing this

It doesn\'t matter what HBO does, if it takes any effort at all to watch and understand the show, at some point they will cancel it (see Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome, etc). If it is not set in the here and now and extremely easy to follow, they have no will to see it through. So any attempt at fantasy is almost assured to fail. I wouldn\'t gget excited.

We\'ve discussed this here before.

This is an extremely complex series. While I would watch it if it ever gets produced, I fear that it would quickly get out of hand. *IF* anyone on TV can do it, though, it would be HBO. We could only hope their level of commitment would be higher than it was on the aforementioned great shows that they abandoned.

Have never read the books, so don\'t have any kind of expectations for it.

As far as HBO goes though, just because shows they have done have been canceled, it doesn\'t mean that they weren\'t worth getting excited about. I\'d rather have seen some of Deadwood than none at all. Same with shows like Twin Peaks, Dead Like Me, Firefly etc. Yeah, it sucks that they didn\'t have long runs that allowed them to completely finish their stories, but while they lasted they were great.

It\'s better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all - as some bloke once said.

My friend has been talking about these books a lot but I haven\'t got around to reading them yet.. That said, they seem interesting and I would definitely give an HBO series based on them a shot. (really liked Rome, the Oz and of course Band of Brothers).

Actually I think this series has a good chance of success with the fantasy trend we have going on right now.. Besides, I think it\'s about time someone tries this, there hasn\'t been a good fantasy TV series since... actually I don\'t think there has been a good fantasy TV series :)

I cant wait for this series. I love the books. I even used to play the card game by Fantasy Flight. Good times...

Technically, that\'s \"historical-fiction\"

Well, whatever you want to call it, it\'s still many times superior to the current BBC Robin Hood series.

Hell yes! The best Robinhood series was the one done by BBC years ago. I have that whole thing on tape and why they desided to have another go at it I will never know.

I think I preferred Maid Marion and her merry men on CBBC.

When I was initially thinking about this the only HBO series that came to mind was Band of Brothers. Which I absolutely loved.
I haven\'t seen Deadwood or Rome. Is Deadwood the western thing with Ian McShane in? I think I caught moments of it but couldn\'t get past TV\'s Lovejoy in a western role. (That may mean nothing to any non UK people).

In the article I linked they are talking about one season for each book, so thats seven seasons at a minimum?

Yeah I can see it not lasting the distance but could be great while it lasts :)

oh yeah, what a classic!!

i enjoyed deadwood. was it 2 or 3 seasons? either way, 2 isn\'t a bad run. you don\'t want something to run for ages anyway

didn\'t hbo do heroes?

So...

George R.R. Martin announced on his \"not a blog\" that HBO commissioned the pilot!

NERDGASM! :bouncy:

There will be some 10-12 pilots made for 2009, and 6-7 will be picked up for a first series. While there is some competition (e.g. period piece crime drama by Martin Scorcese), most other stuff sounds pretty exchangeable (Sex and the City clones).
Still, as fantasy/period shows tend to be somewhat more expensive, I don\'t think HBO would\'ve ordered an expensive pilot if they didn\'t expect it to be good. Plus, ASOIAF would be the only show with an inbuilt audience. So fans have any reason to be thrilled.
Did I say NERDGASM?

Yeah, google stabbed my brother!

I can\'t wait to see where this ends up. I dreaded the possibility of cutting it down to a movie lenght piece, but I am thrilled to see HBO take a stab.

Lovejoy is the best reason to watch Deadwood BTW!

Gee, I have completely missed this.

Not too optimistic here. I\'m in the middle of the third book and the amount of bloodshed, rape, misery and just general unpleasantness one can find in the books is impossible to bring to the screen, let alone the TV screen. At best, this will be some mediocre \"fantasy\" show, at worst... I don\'t even want to think about it. And yeah, I do think that all this adult stuff defines the books.
