Sort of undead or blueish faces...

Hi all,

So part of my new dark angel design idea with the new models will be to paint their faces in an almost undead fashion. I want them to look alive but have some ambiguity as to the ruinous powers...

So i'm having a hard time finding any tips on the colours. I'm thinking some blues or purples but greys? Much like the face on this (which is one of my favorite DA pieces) but perhaps even a little more suggestive of an undead state.View attachment 17933

Ay pointers or references are appreciated

I've been wondering the same thing lately. It's hard to get away from the standard skin tones. I don't know that I would use a straight grey, but blues and purples might work.

I've seen good results from washes. Light base coat of white or ivory or something similar, subtle flesh tone wash, targeted wash of super thin blue/grey. You can do the washes in any order...or even go back and forth until it looks right. Of course there's more to it, shading and highlights and all that. How you place the wash or glaze depends on the effect you're going for, you know, like just the sunken cheeks and rings around the eyes with a blue'ish tinge or more of a blue skinned "too much time playing in the warp" chaotic freak with only a hint of human flesh tone left on the cheeks and earlobes.

There are loads of ways of doing this, both as to colour and method, but I think the easiest method is the one to try first: paint the face grey and then simply colour it up slightly with some glazes of colour.

Arguably the best way to do this is to mix a series of colours (just like you'd use normally for fleshtones) but to have them very grey, but these kinds of colours are hard to judge properly on the palette - many times they'll look right on the palette but not in context on the miniature. You'll probably end up using a glaze here with any method, so why not go the whole hog, save all that mixing and just use glazing over grey.
