sorta weird moment

An odd thing happened to me when I was in my local game store the other day. I was depressed, so of course I went to buy a few more minis. They have a very small display cabinet with some painted minis people can buy. I have never really looked at them before, but I did then.

I was surprised to see that they weren\'t painted all that well and the prices listed were extravagent (IMHO). I thought, I do better than this.

Anyway, it was a happy moment for me. I don\'t think I could bear to sell any of mine as I like them all too much.

I think I am babbeling. Been sick.

There is a game store we visit occasionally which resells painted minis, and the range of prices and quality varies hugely. Unless you can paint neatly and quickly, I can\'t see how any reasonable price would really compensate for the time spent - and I don\'t paint very quickly!

I normally wouldn\'t buy painted minis, and the one time I saw some that I would have bought (a small well-painted GW Chaos army for less than the price of a single Greater Demon, in a show bring and buy) I was broke...

Yep. Most of the painted minis you see for sale at stores do not look half as good as the ones you paint for yourself. And I\'m not talking subjective appreciation here, but the fact that most minis at stores are painted by the employees, who might not be that concerned at all about the hobby as an art form, but as a mean to score a few extra bucks.

Of course, there are exceptions to this, but I\'m not getting into another \"mini painter as modeler vs. mini painter as wargamer\" disscussion here. :bouncy:

I find that the only way to get a half way decent price for a painted mini is to sell it on ebay, and even that is not garantueed, all though you do have more control.

My local gaming store has the same thing, crappy painted mini\'s for exorbant prices, but at least you get a 1 penny rebate as there is a penny glued to the bottom of the bases lol

the closest store to me is GW at Woden, and im happy that they dont sell painted models. but what im unhappy about with is the price. up to 55 dollard for 10 Marines (although i dont collect marines, im just making a point) this meens that they are $5.10c each. yes, $5.10c. but then with orks you get 16 for $40. and for Catachans you get 20, beleive it, 20 for $40. now thats cheap. but then we come to the characters. some are cheap (such as techmarines, apochratharies etc) and some are expensive, but for a good model ($23 for a warlord, expensive but a kick-@$$ model). so overall im happy with the way GW sells there models. :bouncy:

I might as well pile on....

Wow! What an old thread, etc., etc.

On (old) topic. It\'s still true, lo these many years later. And (at least in my case) it\'s the same dozen minis that were there when I started in this crazy hobby two years ago. They looked so much better two years ago than they do now...

Obviously yes... :D
Now if Ainu\'s read all down to thats date it\'s exceptional.
Oldest threadomancy I\'ve seen yet :). Congrats!

The most interesting bit is that four-and-a-half years later, we\'re still bitching about GW\'s pricing. Also the moaning about poor paint jobs going for high prices, even if \"pro-painted\" wasn\'t a coined term back then.

So, what has really changed in the mini industry? Anything at all?

I thought this was going to slip quietly to the bottom of the pile again, but I guess not. This is only good for post padding at this point, so how \'bout someone lock this down?
