Space Marine Vanguard Veterans...

Last week, I was chatting away to the guys at my local GW, and for some unfathomable reason (I think to avoid spending money!) I agreed to paint up the box of the new Veterans with Jump-packs.

I had the forsight to have taken them whilst I knew I had a week off (this week), but boy did I forget how tough it is to paint similar figures in such a time and attempt to get to a certain standard on them. Ideally, I\'d wanted to get them to near enough EM standard. Heh, that kind of went by the wayside after I\'d got two of them nearly done (by nearly, I mean the bodies were done, but the jump-packs not!)

Whether it\'s my age I dunno, but I simply cannot paint for longer than 30mins at a time, so whilst I\'ve been on them for the last few days, I suppose the sum total hours is probably about 6 or so hours. Which seems fairly speedy for me, but there we go!

So, the first one is kinda done (it didn\'t help that the jump-packs are so sodding difficult to put on. No sooner had I got it in place than I decided to drop the thing, causing pack and arms to fly off. This also knocked over a pot of mithril silver on my lap).

Still, after a bit of touching up, the first one\'s done bar the base:

Not completely happy really, but it\'ll probably do the job I suppose.

So today I really went some on the others with the result that I think I\'ll make the Friday deadline now!

I never want to paint like this again...which I guess means a job with Eavy Metal is a definite no-no ;)

Still, they\'re very nice figures to paint, and I\'d definitely grab another set of these to paint up properly!

Very good so far. Nice clean and crisp. The colors are superb. I do like the poses; it looks like they\'re actually getting down to kick some rear.

I especially like the one on the far right sliding down the Eldar bit.

Good stuff.

Hey! I am assuming that by \"to paint up properly\" you mean \"taking your time for each mini without a dead line\" because this ones look really good!

He-He! Yup - there\'s a lot of cleaning up on these models that I\'ve...erm...neglected to finish off because of the time restrictions. I call it battle-damage ;)

You\'re painting them too good! You\'ll never finish them that way ;)

I am also jealous of your old Citadel Colour pots. Can never have enough of those! :D

A few months ago, I was sorting out my attic space at the top of the house, and I finally came across all my old paints. A lot of them had dried, but there were loads of the old washes and inks from that era.

It made me smile :)

As for painting them too good - there\'s a reason why I won\'t be showing any close-ups on these figures ;) !

Well, the figures are done as much as I can really - I think they bare up fine in photos, but they\'re not so tidy up close, but they\'re the best I can do in limited time. Just the bases left to do, which I\'ll quickly do tomorrow morning.

I\'m kind of hoping they don\'t get used as gaming pieces, as quite honestly I\'m not so sure how well the jump-packs are going to stay on. They been glued and putty has been put in place (should really have pinned then, but again no time for that, and as they\'re not mine...well there we go!), but they\'re fairly fragile - would that they were plastic!

Great unit! Well done! I\'d love to see them on the battlefield.

Haha I just realised that I might be the only one not fed up with Ultramarines. Might be because I seldom paint blues (I used to all the time back in the days).

@avelorn: i\'m contemplatin\' a couple of ultras myself...
i rarely use blues, except when i was paintin\' cygnar for privateer, or the magnus agenda for a customer...
might be a nice change from reds and whites to do some blues(i\'ve been paintin\' winter khador for my latest job)...

at least sicarius is an inspirational mini to dive into blue....

@joek: not bad for a tabletop unit...i\'m not sold on the power weapons, but the whites and blues on the armour are great for a quick job...

cheers

The powerswords were my quick-fix solution really - Time was running out terribly, and quite honestly I couldn\'t be arsed to do much else with \'em!

I like that style of highlighting on the power weapons, I think it\'s just the color that\'s not doing it for me (and possibly Jah too).

I think that a deep red or Scaly Green (my personal favorite for power weapons) would suit them a bit better, as the blue doesn\'t quite stand out against the armor.

Aside from that it\'s a great looking unit! Make sure to post a voting link :)
