Space Marine Veterans.

Currently I\'m doing a commission of seven Veteran figures in Ultramarine livery. There\'s a couple of Mk2 ones, couple of Vanguards, and some chapter masters in the mix. All I can say it\'s a damn good thing - a)I don\'t do commissions on a regular basis and (b)my client is in no rush for them!

Real life gets in the way far too much!

Anyway, they\'re good fun to do - the client wanted red weapons, which is fine although not quite what I\'d have done. Anyway, here\'s what we\'ve got so far -

The ones above are now all but done (slightly old photo)

The ones below are getting there :D

Sweet! I love these models, some of the best IMO you can get for Marines. Could you possibly send me you recipe for painting the blue armour as i cant quite grasp my own

cheers

It\'s fairly simple really -

Base: Mordian blue
1st Wash: Blue
2nd wash: Purple
1st highlight: Ultramarine blue
2nd highlight: Ultramarine blue/Space Wolf grey (2:1 mix - if that)
3rd highlight: Ultramarine blue/Space Wold grey (1:1 mix)
4th highlight: Space wolf grey

However, in between each one of the stages I put on a very thing glaze of blue ink - which puts a bit of \'umpf\' into the thing.

That\'s really it :)

Sweet :D

I have always admired your work :)
Do you mind sharing the color recipes for the Gold, the cloth and the purity seals parchament :) They are looking great and I would really like to do something similar on my Templars :)

Well, the gold is fairly straightforward:

Base coat of Scorched Brown, followed by a coat of shining gold.

Give this a wash of brown.

Give this a wash of purple.

Highlight up with the shining gold, and then careful spots of Mithril silver on the edges etc.

And that\'s it really.

As for the cloth, I have to say that\'s trial and error, and is by far the weakest area of the minis in my opinion, but it was a Graveyard Earth base, followed by a brown wash, and then simply highlight up with ever increasing mixes of browns, bleached bones and whites. As I say: trial and error on this, and by the time I got to the photo above, I\'d had enough!

Know what you mean! What brown did you use for the wash?
Is the parchament on the purity seals painted the same way?

I have this far only layered on color from the deepest shade to the lightest highlight. Your way of using washes is interesting though! As far as Ive understood you use them on almost everything yes :) ?

Yeah, I\'m a bit of a fan of the washes! The brown is simply Devlan Mud.

As for using them everywhere, then yes I do, but with a big caveat - most of the time they\'re incredibly (and I mean incredibly!) thin - I tend to use an awful lot of glazes over things, and I find the washes tend to be the easiest way to do it (I\'m fairly lazy ;) ).

That said, I use old-style inks as well - especially if I need to bring a bit more life to a colour that\'s become a bit washed out. Again, they\'re always very thin - you\'re looking at slightly coloured water than watered down ink, if you know what I mean!

As for the parchment - you\'re right - pretty much the same thing as the cloak, but I\'m much happier doing those :D

I like them a lot to! But I have found that they need to watered down a little sometimes :p

As I am kind of new to the hobby I am thinking of painting one space marine from everyone of the original chapter, just to get used to using the different color and for pratice :) I will probably have to steal the idea of painting armour with washes! Do you think that way of painting can be applied to any color? Or is it limited to just a couple, say blues and greens?

:) - Unfortunately, I don\'t have quite the luxury of time were this one of my own projects! Before taking the commission, we decided what sort of ball-park standard they should be - and I think they\'re the same as my previous vets I\'ve done - and there we go. Put it this way, whilst my client is in no rush, I\'m still having to paint up a couple at the same time, which would not be my ideal way of doing things!

Never mind, I\'m enjoying them :D

Well, aside from the bases the first four are pretty much done...and this is the first photo I\'ve been able to take in fairly good conditions.

Ever since I did the Vangaurd Vets last year, I basically stumbled onto a recipe which I quite liked.

Base: Shade Grey
Wash: Asumen blue - not too thick and really on in the ridges and recesses
1st highlight - Shade grey
2nd highlight - Space Wolf grey
3rd highlight - VMC Silvergrey (a lovely creamy colour and a colour I cannot do without. I suppose the closest you could get with GW paints is bleached bone with a fair amount of skull white mixed in.
4th highlight - Pure white in the highest areas.

Like all the other areas, dilute the paint quite severely, but as you go through the lighter colours drop the ratio down a bit to make it a little thicker - what happens is that you get a nice (well to my eyes :p ) mix of colours when you look at it closely, which helps stop the helmet from becoming too flat.

This is the final one I\'m doing for a little while, and it\'s been a bit of a mare quite honestly. Incredibly fiddly to get into the nooks and crannies...Decided to go for a very basic little bit of gold lining on the cloak. In theory I could have gone to town, but there\'s so much going on in the sculpt, I - (a)couldn\'t be bothered, and (b)there\'s enough stuff to look at anyway!

Still, I think he\'s getting there:

Finally finished them. I think they do the job, and I\'m happy enough. Happier to have them done though - I\'m not cut out to do much comission work - it\'s much easier painting my own stuff and selling that!

Fantastic paint job mate... I like it a lot... Especialy how blue and white parts turned out...

The only things i found messy are loin clothes... I think, that You should incorporate more colour into them. Add wery light glazes of snakebite, or bubonic brow to blend this earth shadow colour with bone highlights
