this might be a good spot to discuss other model preference trends you may have noticed.

Well, one time I overheard a GW employee who was saying how 75% of GW products sold that year were Space Marines or another chapter of them (ie. Dark Angels, Blood Angels). On whether they receive better scores or not, try painting one bad, or check out the 4.0 average in the articles section. You may be surprised!

this isnt intended to be a gw bash thread - for the most part i was refering to their other lines. e.g. orcs, and skaven tend to be voted down.
i know this is NOT a novel observation.
even within my own gallery there is a descrepancy.

Well the odds would have it that if they were the most sold.. then the chances of them having the best scores would also be there. If more painters paint them.. then the chances are your going to se good scores.

I like Space Marines. They are the perfectly proportioned little figures I grew up with and I still love them. Rogue Trader and the modern stuff is normally lovely.

another thing is that space marines have lots of large flat areas for blending and freehand, and most people have seen a version of the piece in person either unpainted or badly painted, but have a reference to compare it to.

i do agree though that the smooth painting surface may be a key factor. they do have lots of room to showcase ability.

and we all know about the gene seed...

Well, I know I´m among decent people here, so I´ll speak openly; many of you know my comments, and I always try be be objective, but the fact is: I love Space Marines, of all GW minis they´re my favorites (together with grey knights) so I assume I do give them a better score then other minis of an equal paintjob.
As many people who are in the tabletop hobby did or do collect space marines, it should not surprise that they are popular.
Correct me if I´m wrong.

Nah, historical get the best marks (as an average), rackham also get better marks than marines.
