scouts are hand picked from the native worlds, were they are given training exercises on a training world. If they pass that, then they go to the chapters home planet, get checked for taints, either of faith or mutation, and pass more trials. then the implants are put inside them, the black carapace being the last part. I read the blood angels book carefully.:idea:
Marines from the time of the Primarchs were trusted warriors recruited from the planets were the Orumarcgs were found:
ie. Ultramarines from Ultramar, Dark Angels from caliban etc
Apart from the Custodes - the Emperor\'s bodyguard, who were somewhere in between - probably enhanced at an emryonic stage - but not to the level of the primarchs.

Umm. I am not sure though. I know all the latest generations of marines are from \"local\" stock but I thought the first generation were artifically grown. Hence abbadon and his kin all bearing a striking resemblance to horus, and even rumours of him being an actual clone or son.
talion\'s right. they were originally the luna or lunar wolves, then shortly before the heresy horus changed their name to the sons of horus to give more emphasis to the other chapters because the emperor chose horus out of all of them as warmaster, then after the heresy and horus\'s death, abbadon changed the name to the black legion.
Yes, originally called the Lunar wolves, But they did change to the Sons of Horus BEFORE the Heresey, As the Emperor renamed the Chapter himself in Honour of Horus\' deeds.

The origional Marines that started the great crusade were ALL humans from Terra, elite techno barbarians that not only understood how to fight, but saw a greater vision for humans. So even the first Ultramarines were terran. When they met up with their Primarchs, connected by genetics and sense of purpose that followed them. After that point recruitment occured usually on the worlds the Primarchs were found on. (I beleive it states that certain duelling traits the Imperial Fists took with them from Terra were incorporated into the culture of the new recruits they got later on)
As for survival, ill guess 100 percent or close survived the origional transformation- remember the Emperor was active in trying to raise up mankind at that point...its only after his death as tradition and ritual replaced science that survival and mutation occured (mostly-there is some hints that things like fangs were a part of the origional geneseed-heck, the old Leman Russ mini had fangs)
