Space Wolf Colours - Opinions & Suggestions

Hi All,

It seems an absolute age since I posted anything - in fact it IS an absolute age... Damn real life keep getting in the way!

Anyhow, onto the topic

I\'ve always been a Space Wolf fan at heart, in fact my first ever mini\'s were (horrifically painted) wolf guard termi\'s many years ago. As the new codex is due for the end of the year and various friends are getting their own 40k armies up and running, I thought now was an ideal time to start assembling some models that I\'d keep, regardless of any new releases.

I\'ve said for a long time that I don\'t want to go with the traditional shadow grey + bright yellow colours, and more of a gritty realistic feel. So I cracked out the paints and brushed and have tried out a few concepts. I intend to mix up a bulk of paint, so that I can airbrush vehicles and paint minis with the same colours.

Grey Swatches

One - 1pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Shadow Grey / 1pt Codex Grey
Two - 2pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Shadow Grey
Three - 1pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Shadow Grey
Four - 2pt Codex Grey / 1pt Shadow Grey

Now the reason that these all look a little grainy is that I used an old necromunda bulkhead that was pretty dusty I still feel that these may be a little bit too blue, but what does anybody else think?

Yellow

Left hand -
* Tausept Ochre base coat
* Iyanden Darksun layer
* 2pt Iyanden Darksun / 1pt Badmoon Yellow
* 1pt Iyanden Darksun / 2pt Badmoon Yellow
* Badmoon Yellow
* 1 pt Badmoon Yellow / 1pt Bleached Bone (to edges)

Right hand -
* Vomit brown base coat
* 2pt Vomit Brown / 1pt Golden Yellow
* 1pt Vomit Brown / 2pt Golden Yellow
* Golden Yellow
* 2pt Golden Yellow / 1pt Bad Moon Yellow

Now I still feel that I\'m too \'yellowy\' - any suggestions?

Comments and suggests welcome.

Of course I could just forsake the traditional ideas and go for the pre-heresy colours as on the bookcover: Prospero Burns

I would personally go with number four and have gold instead of the yellow

I agree they do look a bit too blue. I do like the darker theme they have going but I think a more prominent gray will work better.

As far as the yellow, I say scratch it completely and use red, with only very minimal yellow details, using the right hand yellow there.

i painted mine in codex grey and just airbrushed my drop pod with adeptus battlegrey.
dont like it too flashy and shiny ^-^

Your \"one\" and \"four\" work for me. On the Yellow, I\'d probably go for more of a Snakebite Leather-is shade, going up to something like Tausept Ochre/Bubonic Brown, with some bright yellow mixed in only for the extreme highlights. My 2 cents.

I disagree. Quite the contrary: combine your right hand yellow with your #4 grey and use minimal red details. FOR RUSS!!

1&4 look good to me. For the yellow, go ahead and use plenty of it but be sure to balance it with black, brown, silver, or something else fairly neutral so it doesn\'t look too crazy.

For the yellow, I\'ve always been a fan of the Golden Yellows more than anything else. I\'d consider looking into the P3 range of yellows, I find them to be vastly superior to the Citadel ones. Foundation ones are fine tho.

And I\'m also still bitter about Bad Moon Yellow badly clogging my airbrush the other day. Lots of little chunks in the paint which I didn\'t notice while brushing it on

Cool, thanks for the suggestions so far. I\'ll endeavor to do some more test swatches on Thursday, annoyingly I\'ve visitors coming tonight (in fact they arrived 3 minutes ago) and am out for a Chinese with some old work colleagues tomorrow so no time til then - grr

ps Never thought about using red or gold on space wolves.

Maybe it\'s just the light, but I\'d prefer a paler grey. #1 is the closest, though. As for the yellow, I think the proper shade is between the two you\'ve got there. I\'d say Golden Yellow/Sunburst Yellow, shaded with Dark Flesh. You want a brighter color than the one on the left, but one that isn\'t quite so bold as the yellow on the right.

By the way, red accents on Space Wolves are absolutely canonical. In fact, what NGArtStudios said about scrapping yellow completely in favor of red and black is standard 13th Company. I\'d stay away from the metallic gold, though--these aren\'t the pretty-boy Ultramarines!

Finally got round to doing another swatch panel. I\'m more happy with this set (I think).

One - 1pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Astrononican Grey
Two - 2pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Astronomican Grey
Three - 1pt Charadon Granite / 1pt Astronomican Grey
Four - 1pt Adeptus Battlegrey / 1pt Space Wolves Grey

All of these actually apply really well, with very good coverage. The slight grainyness is again down to the rather dusty necro bulkhead I\'ve been using

What I\'m going to do, is to decide over the grey and then choose the red/yellow/gold/etc colouring afterwards.

Anyway, do any of these conjure up the right feel?

Blimey thought I\'d finally found myself some time to do some painting and what happens - three people break their computers and expect me to fix them - bah, wish I\'d gone into something else for a living at times.

Right, I found an old model that I had lurking around, undercoated it and flopped some paint on it.

If you look very carefully at the powerfist and right foot, you\'ll see that I added some Charadon Granite to the base colour to see how it would shade. Although it needs to be taken far darker it actually is subtle enough that it would work on vehicles as well as regular mini\'s. Overall I\'m pretty happy with it. It\'s got enough blue tint in it to make it recognisable as a Space Wolf, but is closer to grey than many. Any thoughts/comments?

*looks sheepish* answer to that one is no. I got round to giving the single marine with a powerfist a stormbolter, but other than that kept forgetting how I\'d started painting them
